Staining garden fences

Hi, has anyone stained fencing or a shed with Cuprinol ducks back a darker shade and then gone over it with a lighter shade. Was wondering if that’s possible and if the lighter shade looks OK? Could wait another year for the darker shade to fade but would rather not have to.

I painted gray slate cuprinol over the bright orange stuff the fence was originally painted. Disaster, looked patchy and awful and faded off to look worse.
Actually ripped the fence down and replaced it it looked so bad...

Oh no ? I just want to stain it a lighter brown. I’ll buy a test pot of the paint, instead of stain, and try that in an area behind a plant ?
