I have decided to put a stall chain across my stable door as my mare kicks when I am mixing her tea.

A few people on my yard have them and leave them attached at both ends all the time, even when the door is shut.

Now, I think this could be an accident waiting to happen, or am I just paranoid?

Surely the horse could get their leg over it, or they could catch it when they roll.

Anyway, I am leaving mine off (outside the stable) and will attach when needed.

Thoughts?

I have them on both of mine and touch wood no issues as yet other than Paddy went through a faulty one when he was leaning on it looking for his dinner!

I think you're being paranoid. The likelihood of the horse getting hung up on a door chain is probably no more than the likelihood of the horse rolling, getting stuck against the door, kicking the door in then escaping 'cause there's no chain across.

Hmm .....

maybe I have reason to be paranoid.

My previous horse fractured his skull in 2 places

whilst in the stable, a wooden one at that.

How and on what, will forever remain a mystery.

I would never forgive myself if something was to happen to her due to my lack of forward thinking, so paranoid I shall remain

I think you're right to be worried. My friend's horse lost his tail by getting caught in a chain. And wasn't there a story posted on here recently about a stable fire and the heat had melted the clips on the chains so they couldn't be undone to release the horses? My oh has rigged up a scaffold pole across my stable door so I can nip in and out quickly, but I don't leave it up overnight.

not sure how they do up but there was a thread about a horse ripping his mouth on the clips that you can hang buckets on.
is it the same sort of clip?

you cant be too careful and the less `things` in a stable the better.imo.

We've got a plastic sleeved chain that's up all the time. Never had any probs with it. It is attached to baler twine loops though, rather than metal rings, so if something did happen then it should be able to break away.
