Stallion Kills Foal.

I saw this when it was posted on here previously. It's the kindness of nature unfortunately. The foal could never have survived; better to have been killed outright by the stallion than to be eaten alive by some predator.

From an evolutionary and genetic perspective though - this makes sense for the 'killer' stallion to do this.
The foal was not the stallion's progeny and in fact was competition to his future youngstock. It had been abandoned by its herd but still smelled of them....
By losing her foal, the mare will be receptive to stallions (i.e. Looking Glass) more quickly.
Perhaps the foal was also a colt...which means even more reason to kill it....as it will in future be a stallion in competition, rather than a filly who could be stolen although I don't think the video tells us.

Of course they know who their foals are...they have to...and in natural equine behaviour, it is normal for a new stallion who takes over a harem to kill the youngsters so he can produce his own babies for his genes to carry on...

Not 'of course' at all. I'm not arguing with what you say, as it is fact, but not everyone knows that! And it IS amazing!!

Erm no sorry wasnt being sarcastic.... I have studied equine behaviour at uni, and have never seen anything like that. I know mares know their own but didnt realise a stallion would know aswell.

Also as the video doesnt have any words to go with it its not actually clear wether this stallion is the sire of this foal or not... so it is possible as suggested above that it did it on the grounds that it was deformed, and wasnt getting up etc!

Didn't mean to offend...I read lexiedb's post as being sarcastic....

LOL - the complexities of the written word strike again!

Yes the Daddy does definitely know his foals - mine adores his baby-girls and they adore him....both foals are always with him wherever he is in the field. Actually the older foal spends far more time with her father than her mother.

i couldnt hear it either, were they out in the wild? i hope so!! if that was in captivity the owner needs to be shot!
i only watched it up until the stallion picked it up and then i couldnt watch. i cant cope with watching death unless its a bug or a spider!!!

I wrote a report on the complexities of a Wolf pack and their behavior / heirarchy and have only been looking in to Equine Behaviour for about 3 weeks now, as i said i have seen agressive stallions but never seen them kill a foal.

Its a sad sad thing to see but i do understand it from both points of view.
