Stallion owners, any advice please?

We have a promising 4yo stallion who so far has concentrated on his dressage career... I was just wondering though, how easy/difficult would it be to teach him to do everything required so we could inseminate a couple of our mares with him next season??

Presumably he would have to be away to do that and therefore interupting his training. Any idea how long that would take??

And once he knows what he's doing could he be collected at his normal competition yard or would he need to walk in to a friendly stud with all the facilities?? Assuming there was one fairly nearby..

Sorry for all the questions. I'm experienced from the mare owners side of breeding but I never intended standing a stallion. I'm not sure how it happened but he somehow managed to stay entire and stay in our ownership!

We have two showjumpers that 'walk in' to a local stud / AI centre and find it works very well for us. One was already dummy trained but the other hadn't done any collecting previously so had a weeks training, including some semen frozen early on this year. Since that they are in and out within an hour or usually less so pretty straight forward. You will have to have CEM and EVA swabs taken in advance each year but apart from that is pretty straight forward. You could also try chemical ejaculation where vet sedates for the stallion to ejaculate which can be done at home, but not all stallions play ball via this method (one of ours does and the other doesn't!) so we have only used it once when the mare has surprised us by being ready a bit too early and needing prompt action! This season was our first experience of this so there will be others on here with far more knowledge than me but from my experience it is definitely very do-able if you have somewhere relatively local. Whereabouts are you based?

Usually takes 3 days to train if the stallion doesnt have any issues and has half an idea what the female of the species is (and most do)
The ones that take longer often have issues because of how they have been handled (ie a show horse colt that may have been hit on his pride of joy for showing it in the ring).
They will often get on the dummy as quick as the others but then object to the AV .
Most will get over it and the worst and most clueless ones generally take a week (we dont get too many of those)
I would say then take him back to the AI centre to collect as he will associate that specific place with that job which means he should be fine at home and competitions.
Or have him trained ,have frozen done and then not worry about having to do it again .

Thanks for all the replies. It sounds like it might be a possible option. 3 days to a week training doesn't sound at all bad. I was worried it might be weeks and weeks!!

He's based in North Notts - any ideas of places nearby that offer walk in collection?
