I'm thinking of putting my 17YO Connie mare in foal! It'd be our 1st (hers & mine) so I know I need to do it this year before it really is to late! (she'd foal at stud)

Her only 'fault' as such is she has arthritis in her hock.. its been treated etc. Is this likely to be an issue? She's not particularly marish, is very smart but could do with being a bit bolder I think. She's got quite nice, forward & active paces.

Ideally I'd like a TB or a Connie stallion.. and the foal would need to be 14.2-15.2 at maturity (14.2 bang on if a Connie).

I've been looking around and quite like 'Canal Laura's Lad' at New Hill Farm Stud.. http://www.newhillfarmstud.co.uk/CLL.html or possible Andes from the same stud... http://www.newhillfarmstud.co.uk/Andes.html
(Chilled or Natural is better for maiden older mares though isnt it?)

What do you think would be a nice match for her? It'd be great if they did natural coverings.. but not essential! (Confo critique welcome!!)

This is her breeding: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/song+duchess

(Confo critique is welcomed!!)

The picture is about 18 months old, she’s probably got a bit more topline/muscle on her neck now. I can take some new pictures if people like.

Thanks!
(I'mm a teeny bit excited!)

You can't beat a nice connie x TB. Your mare is lacking a bit of shoulder and is a bit short in the neck. She also looks a bit upright in her limbs, so pick a stallion who is particularly good in these areas and she should breed a nice foal.
Good luck

Would you not be better waiting for next spring? 1) She is an older maiden, so they can be more difficult to start with. 2) Mares in general tend to be less fertile at this time of year as it is not practicle to foal Sept/Oct, it is not what nature would intend.

It is not as if you even has the stallion picked so that is going to eat into the time as well. I would not advise picking a stallion without seeing him or his offspring. You could start in Feb that gives you plenty of time to get her in-foal so she foals at a better time of year. As for stallion choice the Con x TB is a good mix as is the Arab or AA on a Connie
.

Agree with the above, when i was looking for a husband for my mare i looked at what could be improved on her (which was not a lot as she is perfect!!) and made my choice based on that.

Agree with above comments and I think that the 15.2 hhh TB stallion Groomsbridge May I would be a spot on match for your mare ( look on the Groomsbridge stud website)

Thanks for the replies! I wasnt expecting any!

Gosh - what a blonde moment! I mean next spring.. not this year as in before xmas
I'm hoping to send her off around April/May time :)

I agree shes a bit short in the neck & she stands quite close behind so would want some something to hopefully fix this.

What do you think of the Connie linked? I think I prefer that to the TB & feel it would compliment her faults a bit better?

I'm also considering Templebready Fear Bui but cant find any info on where he is/how to get semen?!

I'd love any more suggestions; I'm open to absolutely any ideas!

Magic 104.. thanks for the link, I'll have a look at that.

Seabiscuit.. I'll have a peek!!

Thanks

I put my maiden 16yo mare in foal last year and there are two golden rules when dealing with older maidens. Firstly only use chilled semen, not frozen. Secondly make sure you take your mare to a top class AI vet. If you don't follow those rules you are unlikely to get your mare in foal.

Its not the end of the world if she doesnt take to be completely honest... I'd like her to though, obviously :) Its all very exciting & we've not even tried yet!

The plan is either to try natural or chilled. I'd heard frozen wasnt great with older mares.

Can you reccomend a good AI vet?
I'm lucky in that I've got Twemlows in Shropshire & Ashbrooks in Cheshire both within 30-45 mins away. Both of which I've heard good things about. I'm cheshire based if that helps.

Did you sucessfully get a foal on the ground?

I don't know the AI vets in Cheshire personally but Twemlows have a good national reputation. Hopefully someone else will be able to advise you of any others in your area who are also excellent.

I did get a super foal from my mare. I've just sold him (subject to vetting) as I desperately want a filly, although it is hard to think of him belonging to someone else. My mare went straight back in foal to the same stallion so I'm waiting with bated breath for next May to see whether I've got a filly.

Good luck with your mare. Its really exciting breeding your own foal. Probably not a sound move financially but from an emotional point of view its wonderful. :)

I can recommend Twemlows, i put my mare there when i lived in Bucks purely because it has such a good reputetion, especially with older or more difficult mares, best of luck:)

hey,
hope this helps.. www.templebready.zzl.org

Another vote, if you go tb, for Groomsbridge May I. He seems to improve all his mares and is the nicest person.
There are some lovely connie stallions around too.
