16.1hh Selle Francais X TB
By Matinee du Madon out of More Wise, a decent TB who was placed under rules.

Bought by me as a foal. Have heard lots of things about Matinee horse being tricky but Maddie was, and still is, very easy. Lightly shown she was unbeaten as a Potential Sports Horse.

Easy and straight to break, she spent the winter hacking with a little light schooling. Safe and sensible - I hacked her out both alone and in company so she was practically bombproof as I am a total wuss!

Sweetie in the stable, never mareish, very polite and easy to do.

At 4 she did some BD novices on a ticket and scored 64%+, she also jumped BN on a ticket and got DC everytime. Then she did some BYEH classes, finished 11th and 13th in really strong fields.

But sadly she dislocated her pastern, she came sound and was never lame again but x-rays later revealed she had damaged her hock which resulted in bony changes. She was never lame even on a flexion test - all in all she is a tough little mare.

She has been on loan to a stud and has already had one foal, her second is due in May. As part of the terms I am allowed to choose a stallion and keep the subsequent foal.

She is a little long but other than that is nicely put together with very correct paces but they are not mega - to be fair I think I have got a little spoiled with Blitz and Diva.

Here are some photos to give you an idea

So really she is an event stamp - but she has a lovely temperament and was very trainable. We have changed direction since we originally bought Maddie and I was considering putting her to a 'dressage' stallion as really that is where our interests lie.

I did think about putting her to a jumping stallion but ultimately we would end up selling it and I quite like the idea of keeping one of her offspring.

So would would you do and any stallion suggestions?

BTW the one thing I would change is her colour... she is ginger

Chase the Ace - very attractive short coupled full TB dressage stallion? That way if you do decide to sell, foalie would have a market as an eventer as well.

Since she is very fine, she would probably go well with one of the heavier German type stallions, Hannoverian/Westphalian types. Not too clued up on particular ones but what a nice looking mare!

I'd be tempted to breed to a jumper that moves, so hopefully you get something that you want to keep for yourself

I'd look at something like Stalypso, good jumping pedigree but a super mover too and he will add a little more substance without going too heavy. He stands at Sprehe

Thanks - she was actually a very ugly foal who really blossomed - the ulimate ugly duckilng

Was thinking about something like Benneton Dream as he is farirly substantial. Any thoughts on him?

LOL - not adverse to chestnut as I did buy her but I would prefer not to have another ginger

He looks super but he is a little older than I would like - I worked for a stud for 6 months in my gap year and the stud manager said "Use an old stallion you get an old foal" Not entirely sure what he meant but it has always put me off

I really like him - and the ability to jump would be great if we decided not to keep it.

Anyone know the implications of buying and arranging semen from abroad?

how is the balou foal she had - they move and jump?

Maybe something like Daddy Cool who is dressage but did win his Jumping performance test to (and is related to Balou) ??

Where are you going to take her - Bell????

they will arrange everything and contact the stud to get it sent over at the correct time !!

are you thinking chilled or frozen x

I'd also be tempted to go with a jumping bred horse that either "does dressage" or moves "beautifully" for you to keep.
Balou has thrown some amzing moving horses and are sellable to all spheres if resulting foal is not what you want

Sambertino? is a lovely stallion, we have a few by him here, you may get a coloured foal too but definately not a chestnut as he is homozygos black, guaranteed no chestnuts! The stock i have by him are well put together and move very well, lovely types and temps. Have done well in the BEF Futurity too!

He is lovely but we have come to an arrangement and we are going to exchange Maddie for next year's foal. She will be staying at the stud up north so I have to arrange the purchase and delivery to their vets in Towcester.

Also he is a 'jumping type' and while he is fab I am hoping to breed something more suited to dressage if possible

Oh wow thanks hun - that is just what I am looking for and within my budget too.

I have just sent them an email asking for a DVD and stud card - BTW I think we are going for Rhondeo

oh that would be fine they just need to call whoever you have arranged it with the stud in germany to get it sent when they need it x

oh right - I like Daddy Cool if you want to go dressage then x

He is a lovely stamp but doesn't have the quickest hind leg in the world but it looks active in every picture. Internet is crap today so it might be the way the video is playing

Ive fallen in love with Benetton Dream and am seriously consdering using him on my mare. I also looked at Chequille but thought he was very long in the back which put me off.

Have you decided if you are putting Diva in foal?

At the moment yes - but then since she has been on regumate she is a different horse so am thinking I am may postpone for a year or so.

I haven't seen any of conformation shots of Chequille - oh pooh. From what I saw I thought he looked lovely and just perfect for Maddie. She is long too so he might be a no go the.

I really like Benneton Dream too and think he would give the offspring some more substance. Have you decided on Gin's husband yet?
wink.gif

Maybe but I do think some of the foals thrown by the stallion were not as nice as some of the ones when he was younger but then I suppose - the age of the mares used may have had something to do with it.

I've seen Chequille in the flesh and he didn't strike me as being particularly long in the back, but maybe I'm misremembering. I'm sure Brookhouse will send you some conformation shots

Glad you are going with Rhondeo btw. Good choice!

They have just rung me and were lovely. She is sending me the DVD so I can have a watch

Couple of other people have all raved about Rhondeo so am 99% certain he is the 'husband'

what about contendro? i'm considering using him on my for pleasure x sandro mare this year. he comes from the holstein stam 104a, is by contender and is the uterine brother to caretano z (by caretino and ridden by jos lansink, http://www.zangersheide.com/en/), contendro II and cassito (cassiano) who was approved at the holstein approvals last year. all are out the mare bravo by reichgraf. he was so popular in breeding that he had little time to compete!

here is a link to gestut famos

and a link to another forum where it discusses the movement of his offspring

Are you looking to use a British based Stallion? Have a look at Pape stud - they have some lovely stallions. I have a Del Piero 3 yr old and OH has a Scolari foal and a Rousseau 4 yr old. I'm very interested in breeding but not much clue when it comes to selecting the right stallion for the mare. What about Demonstrator or one of the Catherston stallions? They have Deanes San Ciro Hit who is by Sandro Hit and is making his mark in eventing and dressage. There's so much to choose from, I wouldn't know where to start!
