I basically have a bit of a dilemma as to what to do at the moment. I have a mare at home who has retired from competition and had her first foal last year a lovely filly by Brief Encounter who I am considering using again on her. However I would like some suggestions as to other stallions that may suit her. Ellie is 7/8th tb, has scope to burn and moves nicely but she is rather stressy mare who gets very wound up at competitions so a stallion with a sensible and calm temperament is a must. I am looking to produce a horse to event myself in the future.

My real dilemma thought is that my current competition horse, Purdy is my horse of a lifetime and I would love to have a foal from her but am not ready to give up riding her yet so I have been looking into the possibility of embryo transfer which would give me the best of both worlds I suppose. The only thing putting me off is that Ellie produced such a smart foal last year and I would say she has more talent than Purdy but is not half as genuine and easy to work with as Purdy is!!! I would like to use Mill Law on Purdy but any other suggestions welcome! She is bold, genuine as they come and moves well but slightly lacking in scope and speed/stamina so would like to refine her slightly.

How is Purdy bred?

Sadly she has no breeding recorded in her passport :( she is registered as ISH and has an Irish Horse Register passport. I wish I knew her breeding as she is one in a million and would love another one like her!! Before she came over to England she spent her life hunting in Ireland (until she was 8) and have a feeling she was really just bred to hunt but turned out to be quite smart so came over to England to start eventing.

I would suggest then that if you do go down the ET route with Purdy and not knowing her background, that I would find a stallion that really stamps his stock regardless of the mare as that could then make up for any irregularities there may be in her breeding. I did this in 2007 with a coloured WPB mare of unknown breeding (and a WB mare) when I put them to El Thuder and the results were superb as he has consistently stamped his stock with blood and quality whilst maintaining lovely trainable temps. So whoever you go for, if you do go for ET, then that is the sort of stallion I would be looking at.

Thanks for that - really helpful advice! Had a quick look at El Thunder and he is smart! It is very hard to decide whether to breed from Purdy who has the best temperament and a good performance record or Ellie who has more talent but isn't as easy to work with. Having said that her BE foal is absolutely lovely and very amenable. Decisions decisions!!

If you are pleased with the BE foal (who I think I've said before is very nice btw) then why not go back to him?

If you are looking for something more tractable from the 7/8ths blood mare, I'd introduce something with les "blood" especially if she is a neurotic sort.

What is her other 1/8th?

If she were mine I'd go for an ISH or IDxTB cross give you a bit more bone and tractability, and if it turns out to be something you don't like/want, they are a very saleable cross

Or I would consider Uptons Deli Circus - seeing as you look partial to the coloured variety!
