I am considering breeding from my mare again sooner than I had previously thought, so I am throwing some ideas around for stallions. This foal will be for me and my requirements for this horse are - tall (minimum mature height 16.2hh - I know it's gamble to breed for height, but still), good temperament, good solid bone. I am 5ft 11ins, my inside leg is 34ins and I am no lightweight, hence my needs. I would also prefer a bay, though wouldn't be upset with a black/chesnut, but really don't want a grey - I like looking at greys, just not looking after them lol.

The mare is 16.1hh middleweight WB, however she was 4.5 weeks premature at birth herself and her sire was 17.1hh and her dam 17hh. Her first 2 foals are 16.2 at 4yrs (by the TB Kings Composer, County Show winner and destined to event) and 15.3hh at 2yrs (by Goshka Ringo).

I am not overly fussed on the breed of the stallion, I just want size, temperament and bone. I don't want a world beater, I want a horse I can ride doing what ever it is I want to do on that day, be it hacking, dressage, jumping, hunting, a gallop on a beach etc.

The stallion HAS to be correct, esp. in front as the mare is offset through one knee. She has a great length of rein and good shoulder that she has passed on to both her offspring. She is short coupled for a mare. Her length of hip and angle to her hind leg could be improved upon, as she is short in the hip and a little upright through the hind leg.

All suggestions gratefully received.

shame you don't want grey as imo Primitive Star would be a lovely cross!

not sure about heavier type stallions- what about looking at Cleveland Bays?

Doesn't have to be a draft (ID or CB) stallion, as such an old fashioned TB or WB would do the job.

I just don't want my house/car/life filled with white hairs, that is the main reason for not wanting a grey. Darker hairs show up less obviously lol.

What about Saint Malo? Big framed proper old fashioned WB with jumping and dressage lines and the loveliest temperament.

I have a 2 year old filly by him out of my slightly sharp mare and she has the most wonderful quiet temperament, can do anything with her, moves well and has a decent amount of bone.

And he is bay! (and so is my filly!!)

You know what I would say; have you seen his ridden pics? http://www.greatbrockhamhurststud.co.uk/onemoretiger.htm

or as SSM says, a Cleveland Bay would be a great choice (well strike me down, I never thought I would say that, don't tell SSM, she'll think I've gone soft in the head!)

Rita's Archie too or Sally has a nice Scallywag horse that goes in for collections but scrap that, just remembered he's grey! Another horse whose stock I've always liked is Another Hoarwithy, a true old fashioned type. I also like Mine but don't know if he'd be big enough.

Spare a thought for Valour R too, Bea's filly is very nice and he's added a fair bit of bone.

Archie is on my short list and has been for sometime. Tiger? I'd have to see him again to see if he'd suit what I want out of B. AH stock I like, but aren't me - I can't put a finger on why. I like the toughness of Mine, but not sure he's big enough in height/bone - will have a look though, as had forgotten him! I'm not averse to a CB, as you know, but would really appreciate some recommendations from those in the know about the breed.

I cant recomend Avanti Amorous Archie enough! Not only is he a truely fab ID, he is such a superb allrounder, BD record speaks for itself and what a jump.
Plus how many stallions do you know that go to the end of year hunt and people dont even realise he is a stallion as his behaviour is outstanding!

(can you tell who i used this year?!)

Even if you dont use him, he's worth a visit as the pictures and vids dont really do him justice!

Ooooooo Had COMPLETELY forgotten about MJ Fine Art! I had a dream a while ago about B having a bay filly by him who had a star and snip and four white coronet bands and a splotch of white on her tummy. I called her Paint, as it looked like she'd trotted across a painters pallete (sp?) and splat lol! Definitely on the list to see!

Archie has been on my list to visit, esp as he's not far away. I've emailed Rita about him in the past.

OOoooo Buskhill Gunner!! I LOVE Ross!! BUT, his sire is also B's Paternal Grandsire, so offspring would be 3x4 to Olympic Ahorn. I know this would be 'ok' with TB's, but I dunno about it in Sportshorses. Thoughts anyone?

A few of you know I ADORE Warrior!! But with Warrior, the offspring would be 4x4 Nimmerdor, again, thoughts?

Thank you for the recommendation of Mysticfold Charming Boy! His sire I have def. heard of and good things too! Really liking the ridden pic of him!

Lots of food for thought here - thank you so much everyone!

And yes, sorry Springs, no greys, though I really do like his Daddy lol!

I am fairly certain that BH Gunnar has no CB in him, he is Dutch bred. He is/was a SHB(GB) stallion though so they would have his full breeding.

You're quite right, he doesn't. However the confusion lies in that the horse by him that Kerilli mentions is out of a mare that carries some CB blood.

Thanks for the compliments re HH aka Ross.:) He is out of a part CB mare, hence the confusion but Busk Hill Gunnar is Dutch bred: by Ahorn and his dam, Tocorette, was by Octrooi (Lucky Boy). They seem to have lovely temperaments without being dull, if you know what I mean;), and whilst he's a freakish 17.3hh, his full sister, Baydale Venus, is only 15.2. She's the one in the Outshine adverts that won Large Hack at HOYS last year as a 4yo.

I also have Jupiter who is by Busk Hill Gunnar but out of a different mare (7/8 TB), he's 16.3 aged 5 and is out of a 16.3 mare (BHG is 16.3).

I've seen a few more by him that have all been a lovely stamp with plenty of substance.

Hi N, thank you for this! You know how much I like HH! He rocks! I am just concerned as B is by Sportsnight, who is by Ahorn (the same Ahorn, not Ahorn Z, but Olympic Ahorn, by Nimmerdor). So the foal would be 2x3 to him, which I am uncomfortable with.

I am a One More Tiger fan too, fab temperament, but ours by him, Myrtle, isn't very big.

no, Millie isn't that big either.

she is probably 16hh now, out of a 16hh mare so he didn't add any height at all.

she is fairly stocky for a full tb though- in a Wide fitting saddle etc but i'm not sure i'd use OMT to add size.

Hello just thought I'd throw one more into teh ix.
He's n ID, 17hh called Classic Vision-stands in Westmeath Ireland but is available for AI.
He's bay, real strong (23cms of short strong bone) and very impresssive in the flash. He's proven himself and is quite the sucessful broodmare sire.
Also seen Gortfree Hero at a parade last year and he is Stunning and absolutely MASSIVE! he's 175.5 cms with a very very good front end. he is very impresive and masculine and I thought him nice and correct. He's a young 'un and stands in ballina co. mayo and i don't know if he's AI-able but here's his breed page:

Hope this helps let us know what you decide!
