I've realised that my mare is coming to the end of her competitive career, and I'd like to put her into foal. This would be for me to compete in the future - NOT to sell.

So, I want to breed an eventer hopefully.

My mare is a cob X TB, by Romany Rye (TB) out of a mare called SunnyMead Lady.

She has scope and power to burn - such a fabulous big jump, bold and brave at any XC jump, but not very confident show jumping. She has nice paces, but they're not extravagant or anything special. A workmanlike attitude.
She's strongly built, she has a slightly long back, and is a bit plain looking.

So, I'm looking for:
Something with some blood, but a sensible and easy to work with attitude and good temperament.
Conformationwise - something refined, a shorter back, with good movement and a scopey jump. A knowledgeable instructor told me to look at some of the dutch horses around, were not opposed to AI, but any suggestions welcome.

So suggestions?

I would suggest pure TB, correct moving uphill type.

A friend of mine was considering breeding her mare last year (didn't in the end) and hers doesn't sound disimilar to yours. MW 15.2hh workman like type, nice big round jump, genuine etc.

She looked all over and had settled on either Revolution or Sir Suave

Have a Look at Romarnic Ranger - been throwing some v v nice youngstock to that type of mare. Amazing temperament and seems to be passing this on to his youngsters.

Search on Facebook for "Romarnic Stud"

Hi, not sure where your based but Twemlows have an open day on the 22nd. April and they have a really good selection of stallions to view!! My dales cross mare (used to event at BE100) has a wonderful jump and was very bold cross country but lacked paces so I chose Wolkenderry for his wonderful paces and personality - it may be worth a day out to look at all the stallions:)

Have a look at Harthill studs Honour Cruise. I saw him at Hartpury and thought he was lovely. Hes short coupled and has a nice jump. Dont know if he has any babies yet.

Can you put a pic up of the mare please? At the moment I would be inclined towards a TB, 1) mare is only half & could do with more blood, 2) you dont know the breeding of the dam so safer to reduce your gene pool. The other choice could be a Trak or a good AA (opens up the PB classes if you want to show the youngster).

Her record shows only once going clear SJ'g & that was her 1st event. Do you know why she lacks confidence in this area?

Thank you for al the suggestions, I've been having a look at some of them :) I mean't to also mention that she is only just 16hh, so ideally I'd like to put her to something taller. She has had foals before, but both died as were twins.

magic104 - I don't understand it myself, and I wonder if its do with a bad experience previously with the poles. She's overly careful to show jumps, if she's wrong to a fence she tends to put in a RIDICULOUSLY large jump and scare herself, run to the next and do the same and usually have it down. She's a powerful horse, and I would be the first to admit that I struggle to hold her if she runs away from a jump. I had a lesson with a pro SJ'er, and he said she's as careful as a cat, and she has an incredibly powerful jump, but theres something in her head that isn't 100% happy with the poles.
Having said all that, she is out and out xc machine, and she'd easily eat up an Intermediate track. I've never found anything to phase her XC - she is also very genuine, not really known her to put in a stop - show jumping included.

Sorry, a little useless I know, but I dont have a standing photo of her. Hope these give you some idea of her build.

I would echo the pure TB sentiment on her as with the cob in her she could do with some blood for the eventing side. If not a TB then a Trakehner would be my idea.

Decent TB stallions I would recommend would be:

Power Blade
One More Tiger
Groomsbridge May I (or Groomsbridge's lovely new TB stallion Colonel Sherman)
Revolution
Primitve Proposal or another Louella boy
Weston Justice (not 100% pure but close enough!)

weston justice would give you the short coupled stamp, and is proven himself at advanced level but also now has stock coming out eventing themselves. and he is from a mare line of eventers too. Plus he is almost totally TB.

Yes I think he would be a good choice for this mare. Groomsbridge May I might not give the height wanted, where as Criminal Law was 16.3 & I think the dam was 16.2. I think Nijinsky is far enough back not to make any difference.

Magic you really must come and visit us one day you might just want to tell some of my stock that they shouldnt be making the heights they are as i seem to have a whole bunch of horses that are a minimum of 16.1 and up to 16.3 out of mares that are 15.3 and by May I ;)
Also the mare will have a big imput into the foals final height.
My stallion is marketed at 15.2 and he is every inch of that and possibly a bit more ,you do have to be careful though as we see many horses advertised at bigger heights and when you get there they arnt anything like.
I have a mare i'm looking for a stallion for who is around 16 hands ,a first foal by May I and i looked at a few that were advertised at 16 hands who wernt actually as big as May I is.

I would look at some of the Louella boys (Proposal has super movement which is passed on and his stock are really starting to do well BE now) or Weston Justice as mentioned above.

Absolutely has to be pure TB I reckon- you want a TB that is proven to shorten up the back & refine& pass on a good temperment& athleticism. Groomsbridge May would be such a good cross. Don't know of any other TB stallion that stamps his stock so well.
A few of the TB/event stallions mentioned on here are known to have temperament quirks would worry about that mix with your mare's SJ issues.

If you went the warmblood route do be v careful well as with any stallion & research what bloodlines make carefull horses and what horses are more brave& less carefull- I.e Voltaire lines are known to be just too carefull so you really have to cross with the right mare.
Also if you decide to go for a dressage stallion you might well risk loosing the jump in the offspring.

Thank you, this is very interesting. I will have a look at all of those suggested in a bit. I like Groomsbridge May I - and Colonel Sherman for that matter.

Sea Biscuit - which horses that have been mentioned have the temperament quirks?

My family havent bred a foal in a while, so were a bit lost on the stallions around at the moment.
I think I'm going to go TB rather than warmblood, and definitely not a dressage horse.

Does anyone have any experience of Primitive Academy at Louella? Or an opinion of him?

That is fair comment & he would be a good match for this mare so not to be discounted.

If it's refinement and movement you are after I would go for Watermill Swatch. He is super refined himself and and has passed the 70 day KWPN test with whom he is approved (also with ISH more importantly ;) ) I have seen him i the flesh and he has really light elevated paces which should suit your mare.
Powerblade is another fantastic TB but is a more strong bodied old fashioned type, will definately add athletiscm (sp?) but I would prefer Watermill Swatch on your mare for refinement.
Think this is a link to him:

Good luck with whatever you chose :]

Another vote for One More Tiger here.

My mare is 16h, 3/4 TB 1/4 Cleveland Bay, very bold jumper, careful SJ, strong willed and a real work horse. I took her to OMT last year, she is currently 330 days so will hopefully have a healthy foal soon.

I went to see the Primitive boys at Louella. Proposal is nice, has nice movement and a nice temerament but I have heard that he can throw some sharp offspring. I wanted to keep quirkyness away from my mare, she has enough of that! I was more drawn to Academy for physical suitability to my mare.

I went to see OMT the following day and decided then that he was the one I wanted to use. He has a fantastic temperament, is a nice size and shape and the lady at the stud is really helpful. I walked down the fence line to see him before I left the day I visited and he came across the field to see me for a scratch bless him.

Just waiting to see the outcome now......

I saw some of his foal from last year and one particular filly was very nice and did well in the BEF eventing section. Check out the stud website for Great Brockhamhurst Stud.

I also need help with identifying best stallion. Can somebody tell me how a) to start a new thread and b) to post pictures of the mares? Everytime I try it goes blank or says I am not logged in...

Yes, could someone please explain to me how to upload photos on here? I am interested in your opinions on my mare - who i want to breed to an event stallion, i would like people's opinions on which event stallions would suit her.

If you dont already have one open an account with something like Photobucket. Load your photos then copy the URL link & paste onto your thread. There is a step by step guide on H&H picture section (cant remember the name of it). If you are logged onto H&H then you should just pick out the start new thread tab from the top bar

I really like your mare, have you decided on any stallions yet?

I've seen a couple of super foals by Royaldik: he's by Royal Diamond, who is known for having a wonderful temperament, and he is a blood-type, short-coupled who moves beautifully. The mother is full sister to Heraldik, who sired Herald 3 (Eric Lamaze) and who had five babies at WEG 2010.

I think that if you are looking to breed an eventer, she could cross with him really well.

Ive just had a foal by Royaldik, and can honestly say her temperament is superb. Its as if she has been her before. So easy, takes everything in her stride. Loves to gallop, loves mud and loves people. Also pirouettes like pro since 1 day old. He has added elegance, movement and quality. If i was breeding again, i would use him again without a shadow of doubt. :)
