Just wondered what you look for or would look for in a potential stallion?

Does the stallions attitude or own competition record come into it (not just parents), or in the case of a stallion well-bred but no record as injured young?

My list would be:
1. Ability - you gotta have it
2. Attitude - whats the point in an animal you can't handle or wont learn?
3. Conformation - not neccessarily perfect but will compliment my mare

An excellent temperament is very important to me, as well as good conformation, breeding and preferably a competition record.

The stallion my 2 are in-foal too has a fantastic temp including his owners kids riding him. He competes in BD (up to Medium so far i think, might be Advanced now though), has great bloodlines and fantastic movement and conformation. TBH there isn't really anything i can fault.

ooh......

just thought to add, when I say ability I dont neccessarily mean a record, even just a pic loose jump or trotting as a foal/younster (particularly in the case of a good stallion injured young)

Also with regards to confirmation, when I picked a stallion for my mare, i picked one with a high head carriage and a neck set on perhaps a little too high as her neck is low and consequently is always on her forehand, the resulting foal I'm pleased to say is perfect in that area!

Though I realise this doesn't always happen. I tend to look at both mare and stallion and decide if I would want the resulting offspring if it was a carbon copy of either.

I would add pedigree to the list!

Otherwise the stallion could be a great individual but from mediocre parents/lines, and therefore might well not produce anything as good as himself. Gotta have the pedigree to 'back up' his good qualities and ensure that they are likely to be passed on...

I was always taught that you have to consider both the 'phenotype' - the horse in front of you, the horse you can see - and the 'genotype' - the horse's genetic make-up, the qualities you can't necessarily see but which are there in his pedigree and may come out in his offspring...

when i was looking for a stallion i looked a lot at conformation and of course he had to be stunning looking. i definately wanted breeding that would compliment my mare. and i watched how it was when being handled. then i watched it loose jumping and its paces .i then looked at some of its youngsters. i looked at loads of different ones but settled on the first one i saw. 6 months previously as he had it all what i wanted. by the way this is my first time so i could be completely wrong.

I used Lohekey Helios De Bornival who is by Romeo out of a mare by Lord Gotthard and for me he had everything, great pedigree, conformation with the slight fault mentioned earlier (but NOTHING has perfect conformation), excellent competition record and one of the most wonderful temprements I've known in a stallion. Plus can anyone tell me of a stallion that can still compete at 1.50m at 21? Love him, he does seem to have quite strong characteristics and every foal of his I've seen is certainly a mini-helios whatever mare it's out of.

I've got the most fabulous 2 yr old by Treliver Decanter with a fantastic conformation and also a fantastic temp. - cuddly and loving and very willing and takes everything in his stride.

I'd say goto Derek (Decanter) every time.

Whilst I had a special horse by It's without Doubt from Brendon event stallions - the temp. was no-where near as special as Derek's baby and nor was the conformation

Temperment, breeding, ability & confirmation to compliment the mare. It is easier to see how the stallion stamps his stock when there are a few offspring around. Not been possible this last time as the stallion has never covered before.
