Stalls

Are they cross tied? That is a bit sad, when we went to PC camp and had stalls they had a rope and a log so they could move around a bit.

That's how they were stalled where I worked years ago with a rope and log, it makes easy mucking out you just go along the line chucking out the back third of the stall.

My pony always used to turn round somehow and poo in his water!

More like the PC ones described. I’m moving our pony and horse into my uncles barn but it’s short term. They both live out and we’re lucky to have plenty of grazing. I just want a back up over the winter and thought stalls might be easier to put in than boxes. Obviously some lovely big boxes would be ideal, but I thought it could be a good short term solution!

Some of the stalls were separated by a plank of wood hung from the ceiling but those horses generally were driven together in pairs so they got on and then they could easy be taken down if need be.

You can buy the metal framed stables that are movable but they are not cheap to buy so I suppose stalls would be a cheaper option.

Couldn't you bodge up some pens with heras fencing? You can get used stuff quite cheap.

Places do still use stalls - either cross tied or with the rope and block. But the horse cannot lie down. It wouldn't be my choice for my horse. But if you are too tight for space for a pen or proper stable then I suppose it is better than nothing.

When we lost a stable block to fire we had the horses in the indoor school in pens. You might be able to do that?

There were stalls at the riding school I used to go to. The ponies were tied with a rope and block. They could lie down quite easily. They went out at night and spent the days in the stalls.

At camp they used to lie down, they had a straw bed. I think as long as they are out for most of the time it would be fine.

I remember farm horses that were stalled with a rope and block and they could lie down. It was a stable for working horses, as they were out during the day pulling things. I suppose stalls are much easier to muck out and a way to keep many horses in a smaller area.
