British Horse Society helps internet horses

Two emaciated horses are now recovering and in a place of safety thanks to a joint effort by The British Horse Society, the RSPCA and members of the Horse and Hound Online Forum.

A post on the Horse and Hound Online Forum on Wednesday evening highlighted a serious concern over the welfare of two horses in Stamford, Lincolnshire, just a stone’s throw from where some of the world’s top equestrians are competing at Burghley Horse Trials this week.

In a matter of hours the forum was almost in meltdown from concerned horse lovers desperate for action. A BHS Welfare Representative was first to the scene and described one of the horses as among the thinnest she had seen in her entire career.

With help from several Horse and Hound Forum members, local police and the RSPCA, the BHS swung into action and removed the horses (since nicknamed Carrot and Spud) to a place of safety.

Lee Hackett, BHS Head of Welfare said: “Whenever horses are allowed to suffer by those who are legally and morally responsible for their care and well-being we all feel sick to the stomach. This was graphically displayed by the outpouring of concern and outrage on the H&H Forum.

“In the case of Carrot and Spud we are pleased that the BHS was able to get to them quickly and remove them to a place where they will get the care and attention they so desperately need and deserve.”

So glad. Just shows you what you can do when you try doesnt it. Im so glad that Andy had the foresight to post his concerns on the forum. Id imagine the horses would have had a long wait for help otherwise

I suspect that they will get full credit when the full details of the case are able to be made oublic, assuming they are happy with that.

Andy and Chloe know that WE know who should be thanked in the first instance. I bet the knowledge their initial input led to such an enormous and incredibly swift action, which has seen the removal of th horses to safety (and we hope recovery) is enough for them. I hope they don't mind the accolades when they arrive!

Thanks again anyway you two

Fingers crossed you made the difference the horses needed in time.

I beleive from one of Lee's previous posts, he apologised for forgetting to thank Andy and Chloe and has stated that a substantial thank you is being arranged. Lets not forget this was a press release, where the press want the bare facts, not who did this and who did that.......

I have been following these threads for the last couple of days online - just hitting the refresh button over and over. But I was not registered before now, so could not comment or contribute to the threads.

Anyway, I have just registered because I know that the destination of the horses was to be kept top secret - many people who were there yesterday including Lee has asked specifically on this forum for it to be kept quiet and not mentioned....for the safety of the rescued ponies.

This info seems to have not been explained to the Rutland and Stamford Mercury...they have published online (and possibly in print too - I dont know) where they have gone...

The reporter has openly published where they have gone - and so thought you should all know. Perhaps Lee could get on the phone to them asap? After how horrid the owner sounded, the last thing we want to happen now is for everyone involved to have him turn up in the middle of the night and take them back never to be seen again.

I'm happy to call them - just let me know...we must get that removed ASAP...

Anyone know of any other press that were there who may have overheard where they were going to as well - god forbid this info ends up going national via the Daily Mail or something - I know someone on here spoke to plenty of press at Burghley yesterday and handed out pictures etc.

Maybe they weren't names as they may be classed as witnesses if it goes to court? (I don't know that it's just a thought). Also for their own safety it's best now to name them. I hope no one looks on here and keeps seeing their name mentioned and passes back to owners as it wouldn't take long for someone to know or find out where they live and I would hate there to be retaliation.

Bl**dy hell Stamford Mercury have stated in that article where the horses have gone?? I thought the BHS etc asked for the name of the place NOT to be mentioned?

Whoops sorry only just fully read Dancing with Horses thread saying this.

Er - I'm afraid I may have bullied her Flowelady

Once we reached £1,000 I suggested that maybe we could raise the target to something higher with a view to achieving it by the end of the weekend - I reckon we can do it!!!

Whats so infuriating about that press release from the paper, is they only mention the RSPCA.. the RSPCA were willing to ignore the case.. it was the BHS and you guys that actually did something about it.. once agin the RSPCA come up smelling of roses.. Grrrrrr

Well you missed out on £5-600 from me as i would have done a collection with our donkey to raise money for the cause.

I read the original thread right to the end and the reason you aren't getting the money is that the usual rabid anti french horse crew joined in and hijacked the thread. And no one bothered to tell them that the thread wasn't about their favourite subject. They were just allowed to rant on in their usual abusive, illiterate and nonsensical manner.

Me and my donkey will give our money to a more deserving cause. so tough, £5-600 you could have had but you blew it.

"we" presumably being the BHS?!!!! Your money obviously, but the cause was not us but horses in need - sorry you didn't consider this to be "deserving" enough. Your comments are petty.

Oh, how generous of you, bigears. What a nasty sentiment. The people on here were concerned, swung into action and got things done for the sake of the poor horses - I went that morning and saw them, they looked worse in the flesh than they do in pictures, if you can believe that.
I really can't see what you are trying to achieve, by claiming to have achieved something but refusing to contribute to such a worthy cause. What a despicable person you must be. Enjoy it.
I wasn't anything to do with the end of the thread, and have no idea what was said, but before you accuse anyone else of being illiterate, I suggest you check your own level of literacy.
