oldie has been stamping back legs every so often in field the past couple of days. I've had a good look and can't see anything, and she's in no discomfort or lame etc. I'm thinking possible mites...never had one with it before, but am i right in thinking give it a squirt of frontline??

Before i got Catchphrase i was at a riding school and there was a mare that did this. It turns out she did have mites. They ended up just clipping the feathers off but im sure frontline will work.

frontline is not licenced for horses but i was advised by a vet to use it.you need to buy the pump spray and treat twice about 2 weeks apart.
you cannot see the mites because they burrow under the skin.
when i 1st got my cob she stamped but i treated her with the frontline and she has never had it re-occur.i never clipped her feather off but used gloves to work it in well.

Thanks guys. She is a very fine welsh x arab old pony with little feather actually. She has however lived out all winter very well, and i have never experienced mites before. She is showing classic symptoms though and I will spray with the pump action frontline tomorrow. Thanks for your help

Sounds like mites.

Please be aware that the pump frontline spray is POM(prescription only) as it's easy to overdose.

I use the spot on equivelent of frontline (a different brand, which is cheaper and comes in a 4pack) and give a medium-sized dog dose on each leg. It's much much easier to do that trying to get spray frontline down to the skin on heavily feathered legs!

pigs in space! my mare is doing this - i am goin gto cal lthe vet out apparently there is a course of 2 injections he can give (i cant get close enough to her back legws for a full inspection but thought I would do it anyway just incase)

frontline should do the trick , my old horse used to stamp his back legs , but only at feedtimes, or when getting rugged / girthed up etc , he just liked to stamp !!

My lad does this when he's got mudfever. I agree mites are a more likely cause but it may be worth checking for this too.

Have you checked her udders?

My boy stamps his back legs when his sheath needs cleaning and I understand mares do this as well when they get dirt between thier udders.

My boy does this, I had a look at his legs (as best I could under all the feather) and he had a little scabby area, nothing too traumatic but I think the scab was itchy. He's also a little itchy all over at the moment but his thick winter coat is coming out in bucket-fulls! I keep scrubbing him with a rubber curry comb and he loves it!
