i've just being noticing for a while that standards defo seam to be falling when people compete or hunt
For example long hair not tied back or even in hair net, Badly tied stocks or dirt ones, Earing...... Dirt tack!!! multi colours everywhere..... where do i stop....
Is it me or are standards just not the same, don't people get taught only more how to tie a stock correctly and
why they shouldn't have earing in whilst hunting....
Or that cleaning their tack will make it last for years and is a very good for your own safety checking condition of stiching
I know each disciple does have is own standards............ but boy, some don't even try to look nice and show the horse off
needed to share

I have noticed the very same thing.

At the weekend it was newcomers day for our local hunt, well there were alsorts!

Some had really made the effort others.......OMG long hair everywhere.

Last weekend apparently one girl had long flowing hair plus her jacket...black SJing one - our hunt is only wearing tweed this year - but it wasnt even done up! it was left flowing, along with her shirt hanging out!
NOt only that but she nearly removed one poor long standing member of the hunt as her horse was messing about! and she (without thinking) turned her horse direct into said person who was nearly wiped clean off their horse!

I was asked to tie 3 stocks at Aldon horse trials - one (MdeM herself) hers was beautiful and clean - the other two were awful, dirty and not even ironed!!!!

What is the world coming too

is pony club to old fashion????? or even riding clubs????

[/ QUOTE ]
No not at all. But not everyone was in the pony club or is a member of a riding club. Infact many people don't come in to horses until later in life - so unless you have actually had that kind of etiquitte training you are not going to know what is right and what is wrong.

I went out on a new commers day the other Saturday with my hunt - and some of the new commers looked absolutely shambolick!! But most of them didn't know any better.

The Master was wonderful. Gave a speach etc. before we moved off and explained some of the rules and regs etc. as well as pointed out dress code for future. It was done very nicely and not at all in a condensending way. So next time these people will know that putting hair in a hair net is much nicer than having it hanging round your face. Earings are not really correct, and clean tack is nicer and safer than dirty tack.

I wear my small studs out hunting - I never take them out

However I have long hair and it is ALWAYS in a net - if I dont have a net (unusual) then it is in a plait

Plain numnahs, clean tack, etc makes people IMO take you more seriously anyway!

at small unaffliated show at local yard..all or most of the kids (well parents) had made the effort and worn jackets etc but then one older girl that worked there went jumping in the ring in jogging bottoms, tiny t-shirt that didnt cover up her knickers appearing and dirty boots....now to me that was disgraceful and what a bad image to set for the young kiddies

made me sooo angry

Hair loose out hunting is so so dangerous - not only in the eyes blocking vision but you can end up bringing a bush home with you - I saw a persons face almost ripped off once by a branch out hunting.

In the 'good old days' when I taught we always had to have beige jods, boots and a shirt and tie on to teach (I still do if teaching PC) -

I know exactly where you are talking about as they have doen it on a few occassions i have been tehre too. They think as their staff they dont need to make an effort.

oooooh that happened at my yard the other day. We had an unaffiliated SJ competition and all the kids and other adults were in white jodhs and jackets, stocks, ties, long boots etc. Then one of the staff entered the arena in JEANS and WELLINGTONS would you believe...

Not only that but she was actually riding someone's pony for them - and that person had gone to the trouble of getting up early and plaiting the pony so he looked nice!!!!! We were furious about it and the judge complained afterwards that if anyone came into the arena dressed like that again she would stop judging.

In my day (oh God, I sound like my parents! - you'd have been told off!

i must be a really cow cos i will say something... last year some child decided that she would use my horse's as her brakes. All i felt was BUMP... my horse was a star a didn't do anything, i turn round and clocked poor girl would could stop...
Now i could have just balled her out but i thought she'll never learn.
So waited until standing outside covert and went over and had told her and very politly but firmly, that if she couldn't stop pony, she shouldn't use a horse, and that she should stay out to side and and go round in circles to stop, i was amazed no back chat at. But found out later i know as very scary lady - which i certainly don't have a problem with.

But i've being thing about it, we get asked all these question about correct dress on this forum, so information is available, so i'm coming to conclusion it laziness about 'correct dress'

I am guilty of joining those slipping standards. I did a dressage at the weekend and didn't plait for it, which I've never done before. My excuse is that I didn't want my long suffering husband having to wait around as he was coming with me.

Felt kind of liberating 'though! I did however make sure his mane was neatly pulled and sitting on one side!

It is laziness, I'm sure. Drives me mad! I'm scary too, I've got a young horse this year and am now being a complete dragon, with old ned I didn't mind all the kids following me - 'Cos we know your horse never refuses and never kicks'. This year, they're on their own!!
I spend all day yelling 'Get off my heels'...have seen too many horses ruined by being trodden on.

Thought I should add, I have no problems with newcomers turning up wearing whatever, as long as they are clean and tidy. Its if they decide to take it up seriously - ie a 5 day ticket or subs, they should research what is required and make an effort!
If you hunt you support old fashioned values and TRADITION.

I always go out SJ smart but not always cleaned and polished!!

Having a full time job, 3 horses, a 7 year old girl and being a tad busy doesnt always allow time for polishing boots and cleaning tack, however horse is always gleaming and saddle cloths etc clean and washed, hacking jacket has been known to be unwrinkled that very morning....but having done showing for yonks, its a little luxury not having to worry about it all the time.

However, I do put hair up and a I draw the line at stuff not being tucked in or tied! Plain lazy that!!

It all boils down to having a pride in what you do. You don't have to spend a fortune on tack & clothes to look smart. If your horse is well groomed, tack is clean, you are well groomed then you feel smart & are ready to take part. Additionally it shows respect for the show/hunt officials.

Some people seen to actually have a pride in being unkempt & riding a dirty animal in grubby tack....disgraceful!
