Standing in with no food

Sorry - dont know how to quote
- tally-ho, i have never heard of any horses getting ulcers on the yards Ive worked in. Tiddly pom, in most of the yards they got 1 haynet or armful at about 4.30 and I expect it was all gone by 7pm. Next lot of hay at soon after 8am.
This was standard routine in most hunter/jumper yards in the 60s 70s 80s

The livery yard I worked at in the 90's did a hard feed at 8am and a day net then another hard feed at 3pm with a night net (usually 2-3 sections of hay depending on size of horse) and that was it until 8am the next morning.

Horses consume grass, hay, or haylage, but depending on the required labor routine and available feed, salt, concentrates, and fruits or vegetables can also be added to their diets.

Pick of grass BP, usually 15 mins of hand grazing on arrival if not parked on hard standing, or soaked hay fed at ground level.
I would never let my horse touch grass in a strange enviroment but would always provide a haynet and water with apples and carrots in it. I am sure you will find time to have a coffee and cake before competing.

Can I ask why? And what would you do if you took your horse on holiday or even on a very long ride? You can't carry a haynet with you all the time? (For context, obviously I wouldn't let my horse eat off something that was clearly oily or full of nasty weeds but otherwise....all of life is a chance for a snack for mine)

It slightly depends where it is but a show ground or similar you have no idea what worm burden is in the grass or whether a horse with a virus eg strangles / EHV / general virus ? was eating that grass earlier.

If you are out in a ride eating from hedgerows/ verges not near horse populations is probably safer.

Rule of thumb at competitions / areas of high transitory horse population

Don’t with strange horse

Share buckets
Drink from common water supply eg trough
Let horses touch noses
Graze areas others might have grazed
Get too close in an enclosed space
