It was suggested to me last night to use a standing on Dougal, due to racing etc he can carry his head quite high at th emo whilst cantering and jumping. I dont have a standing so could I just put the rings of the normal martingale through the noseband?

Im sure someone on here before said no not to do that to someone but I cant see how it would be much different.

Thanks

I've seen it done on lots of occasions and provided that you have it adjusted correctly and are not using on a crank noseband (possible pressure from rings) I can't see why it should be a problem - certainly not as a trial run before purchasing.

Yeha, should be find proding its the right length, same as any standing martingale. You should never used a standing to jump, they can get caught in it if thier head goes low or if they peck on landing they can't use thier head and neck to balence to save themselves and you.

Yes it would be just a trial really - he hopefully wont need it for long or if he does I should be able to get one within the nxt week.

Thanks

It was my jump instructor that advised it! So will give it a go for a few lessons and see

I was just about to post to say that, provided it is adjusted correctly, there should be no problem jumping with a standing martingale. My daughter's jump instructor has also suggested using one to help with a particular problem.

. There is nothing wrong with jumping in a standing martingale. If there was no horse in America would ever get to leave the ground and the BSJA would ban them.

If you want a 'nice' option for a standing get a leather elasticated side rein and put it throught the neck strap of your running one (removing the running martingale bit first!) this gives you more adjustment and with the elastic is not so fixed for your horse. I have no problem jumping in mine with my youngster. He was inclined to bolt when frightened and occaisionally stands up so this really helps him to keep calm.

I'm very pro standing martigales -old fashioned but they really do their job. I've hunted/SJ/XC using one & when I really need brakes I've fitted the flash noseband as well (of course the standing goes to the cavesson, not the flash!).

I find they send a better message to the horse regarding height of head as its direct & will be effective regardless of how much rein contact you have.

I have to compete one of mine in a standing martingale AND a running martingale - before everyone stresses - he really needs them both & goes really well in the combination.

Well as someone who is currently only a short way down the path of rehabbing a pony who has been hunted for 4 years on a standing and has now has a totally screwed up back and neck problems, I'd never touch one but having said that, I do honestly believe that if used correctly, with proper supervision, for the right reasons then try one, but please be careful. I'd also look at other issues, schooling etc.
