Sorry this is a rant as it has been getting on my wits but why oh why do people advertise horses for sale with pictures of people standing on the horses back? I guess it is showing the horse is safe and quiet but come on really.

Sorry rant over and BREATHE

I hate it too im sure its not good on their back esp when they do it with a saddle on. I always pass over add for horses like that because it makes me wonder what else they have done to the horse / they obviously don't respect it so prob has other owner related issues.

It annoys the hell out of me too. Why on earth would you put such a heavy small pressure point on a horses back?

Sure lay all the way across him, show how he doesn't mind your weight spread out all over his back, but standing on him? nasty

Pretty sure it can't be that bad for them - vaulting horses have people standing on them all the time and don't seem to mind?
I don't agree that the owners have no respect, if anything they probably do any and everything with their horses and the horse may well be totally bombproof as a result.

When i was a young lass, we were taught all the balance exercises ie: round the world/scissors with the saddle and without, walk, trot, canter with and without saddle, vaulting onto pony sideways and from behind and yes we stood without saddle and our boots, on ponies back, holding onto reins in walk and trot..ponies were happy and we learnt where to put our feet ( a bit back from either side of withers).....my balance was and still is very good when riding. Showing it on adverts i dont think is a great advertisement but i dont condone the practise

Oh stop bragging!

It IS damned annoying to us who can't do it!:D:D:D

I don't find it irritating so to speak, but my safety risk assessment mind comes out and most have no hat and no hold on the horse, so if it moves even one step, you're likely to go splat.

You just answered your own question.

It does no harm, why get upset about it? What do you think about vaulting horses then? They look ok to me!

Dont see that as a problem to be honest. Far worse is the practice of horses in draw reins and fancy gadgets a happy chunky pony with a great temperament wont bat an eye at someone standing up on it. I hate the legs forward and no hat brigade, and the I am far to experienced to need a hat brigade, and of course tiny babies on ponies with no hat.
The ad that would make me pass it by is one of an overbent and forced outline god knows what the damage to that horses back is

I must admit that adverts that have people standing on the horse or ones that show 3/4 people sat on it's back put me off enquiring/responding to the advert.
If the horse is really that safe/laid back then I'd rather see them photographed next to a large lorry, tractor or have plastic bags blowing around them...things I'm going to incounter on a daily basis. I'm not going to stand on a horse or ride with 3 of my friends at the same time so that type of photo does nothing to sell that horses calmness to me.

Yeah I can't stand it either. Always scroll right by ads like that.
Plus-it proves nothing! A girl I was friendly with in college advertised her horse for sale with such a picture as if he was safe but I know for a fact it used to explode regularly. Infact she brought it to college and it was sent home in less than 2 weeks for dumping students and hospitalising one.

it doesnt really bother me that much, although i dont see it as a selling point, so wouldnt be impressed by it, what DOES annoy me though is adverts of people riding in trackies and trainers with no hat jumping a massive jump badly! Horse covered in mud...... It seems to be the norm now.

BTW i dont mind people that ride in trackies and trainers (its up to the individual what they wear), i just hate seeing adverts like it. Why not wear nice things and have the horse all washed up looking its best? I dont get it?

Well said!

For some reason adverts like this do annoy me, but I do not allow them to bother me or rule the advert out. They are doing it to prove that the advertised equine is as safe as you could ask for. Indeed, I sent my youngster away to be backed recently, to a highly respected trainer. On my first visit he stood on my boys back for a few moments.

Who has seen the Devils Horsemen? They do quite a lot of riding standing on the horses backs.

Actually, and this is something someone else made a thread about, what baffles me is the use of pictures in adverts?
For example, I saw an advert on facebook the other day about a horse. It was described as 'very handsome' but the picture used was a scruffy horse resting a hind leg tied up in the yard and looking away from the camera?!

strange isnt it?

Actually my horse had a bad advert pic, he looked so ugly, big head and small body. I didnt contact the seller.

About a month later i was talking to someone in a tack shop about looking for a new horse, she started telling me about a young horse she was selling with good breeding ect, i went to look at him. love at first sight........ he was (and still is IMO) stunning!!

Turned out he was the horse in the bad advert id dismissed, no idea how she had made him look so ugly!:D

Yes this annoys me more. I saw an advert the other day for 'Superb Dressage Horse' and in all the pictures it was jumping?!?!?!

Think I probably did more damage to both me and my pony last week when I attempted a 'round the world' 20 years after I used be able to do it. Graceful it was not.

It is all easy peasy for my friend Trudie Trollope, Head of Breaking Cart Horses Department. She can vault, break dance, pole dance and do the twist on top of a horse.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I absolutely hate it, it must be so uncomfortable to the poor horse, when just a nice relaxed pose on the horses back would go down very well
