How much is normal? Is any normal? My field is a field/lake combo at current and set to be for atleast the next 2 weeks if the weather is anything to go by...

My poor mare has had on off abscess issues since Oct and has a huge crater out of her hoof that needs to heal. But hates boxrest.

So am I crazy thinking that everywhere will be wet? Do others happily let their horses stand in water whilst turned out!?

Also any suggestions for making her poultice waterproof for coronet height puddles..!

Mine have a little paddock with mudcontrol slabs as an alleyway between the shelter and the hay/water through. The bigger paddock/field has lots of water and they have access to that about once a week to have a hooley. They completely trashed it today but it was fun watching them.

My horse has had an abscess dug out plus another one burst out of the coronary band and now a large crack in the hoof. It was great when the snow was here as it kept everything clean but it is very wet now with sucky mud. I am doing the usual nappy/cotton wool/vet wrap/duct tape combo with a sort of loose-ish duct tape sock going up to his fetlock. It is working surprisingly well, the mud does creep down the top a bit but nowhere near the holes. He doesn't tend to thunder about the field though. As we have prolonged rain forecast I am contemplating Red Horse Hoof Stuff to pack the holes as an additional barrier. It's a pain the neck isn't it.

Sadly it's either turn out in standing water or no turn out at all :( it is trying to drain, but can't keep up with the crazy rain we are having.

I've been nappy, vet wrap, gorilla tape. Did have a woof wear boot but she broke it, so have another on order. Then we're going to try nappy, vet wrap, plastic bag, gorilla tape, hoof boot ? Hadnr thought about doing the tape higher up that her hoof...

Archangel, I absolutely feel your pain. It is an absolute nightmare at the moment. The big freeze was way way better.

I would add some French green clay (bentonite clay) mixed with copper sulphate to the nappy. You can get these https://tubbease.com/ but I don't know how resilient it would be to turnout. You'd definitely have to duct tape it to hold it on, I reckon.

Thankyou guys, I've formulated a plan:

Scrub
Clay where no drainage seen
Leave possible drainage site alone (not fill)
Nappy
Vet wrap
Gorilla tape
Rubble sack (gorilla taped at top to close)
Woofwear boot

If this doesn't stay waterproof then...can't say I haven't tried ?
