I'm thinking back a good few years here, but share cob had strangles and the only way it affected her hooves was that we couldn't get a farrier near the field for the period of quarantine, so her feet grew long, her shoes dropped off and, if anything, her feet improved as a result
Sorry, not terribly helpful I know. It could be because she didn't have any treatment - she had a few bute at the sore throat stage and that was all.
Strangles allone not really. The treatment with penicillin can kill the intestinal flora and this could lead to some complications if the horse is sensitve to laminitis.
Probably a coincidence then. Youngster has a scar on his neck, probably from an abscess. Whether he has had strangles or not, we don't know. He has white feet and there was a fair amount of blood visible in the walls of all four, no obvious event lines and no reason to suspect laminitis as such. He did have overgrown hooves (farrier took off a good three inches) and rampant thrush, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Who knows! I'm just curious as to the cause of the bruising. It has all grown out now. Should have taken pics-doh!
