Hi just wanted to see if i could get a heads up on this heard lots of rumours some of which im sure are just that, but does anyone know of any 'confirmed' cases of strangles in the york area?? I know yards can get very defensive about this and think by having confirmed cases, it gives them a bad rep!! god only knows why as isnt anyones fault unless is bad management!!

just wanted to see if anyone new the truth or if silly rumours have just been started!!

cheers guys :)

As someone who works not in York, but an area of a similar size - there is always confirmed strangles somewhere nearby.

do you know which yard has got confirmed cases?? My horse had strangles years ago and we nearly lost him so just get bit worried when hear stories about it being close??

I really don't see why yards try to keep it quiet, surely by being responsible, making sure that horses are kept on the yard until clear and ensuring that visitors from other yards follow bio security, this horrible disease could be managed and reduced far more effectively.

I would be warning people locally if we had it at our yard so they know to avoid footpaths/bridleways that adjoin our fields. When our dog caught kennel cough from a walkers dog we immediately stopped taking him to the yard for a month and I warned every owner that I saw so they knew a) to watch out for symptoms and b) that someone was walking an infected dog and to keep their dog from mixing with other dogs. I would do the same if my horses had an infectious disease.

There are 2 confirmed cases in Malton and I have heard about one at a large centre near York but don't know if it's true.

People are being so irresponsible, letting horses off and on the yard etc.

It drives me mad. There is no shame in having it, it happens. There is shame in how you deal with it however and not telling anyone and hoping that they just wont find out by which time infected horses have been moved and infected other horses/yards is just crazy.

I agree, these things do happen, and a lot of stigma is attached. The yard in question has been very good (so Iam told) nothing coming in nothing going out, all horses are not allowed to leave there paddocks, the whole yard has been disinfected, cars etc are disinfected when coming onto the yard and when leaving, vets are visiting as often as required.

Ive not hear of the other case in york you have mentioned but like you say usually they kind of keep it under wraps.

I'd be some much more likely to use a yard that had had strangles and treated it properly than some tin pot yard that had never owned up to it.

Unfortunately the yards that kep it hush hush are the same small yards that have no insurance, business rates etc and operate under the radar providing cheap livery.

grrrrr it really makes my blood boil!

I am lead to believe that the horse that started with the strangles came from the type of yard you have just mentioned. It was only at the new yard for three days before it started showing signs of been unwell. :(

The origins of it in Malton are that a horse came from a sales that I will not mention - bought outside of the ring as it was too ill to go through! purchaser felt sorry for it and bought it and took it livery yard 1 who turned it straight out with the herd - hay presto a yard full of strangles. No quaranteen was put in place ( even to the point of people at the yard attending a local show!!) and the infection spread to another local yard with equally lax quaranteen rules and it has now gone to the large yard at York through a horse carrying it.

Totally agree with you both i hate yards that are not doing absolutely everything to help contain it to just them.. and prevent others having to go through the same crap and vet bills which come with strangles.. We moved from our previous yard bout 10 years ago because of there distict lach of consideration for others whilst the yard had it ( did wait for the all clear before we moved)

Would you both mind pm me the names of the yards which have confirmed cases so i can try and avoid at all costs!! the more people that know these yards have them the better as far as im concerned as if the yard isnt going to be responsible enough to contain it then maybe people staying away from horses or people from these yards may at least help reduce the risk of spreading it.

I dont get the whole stigma with strangles surely honesty is the best policy when it comes to these things!!

I have to say the reason yards keep Strangles a secret is that other people treat you like lepers.

When we had Strangles we had the yard in lockdown, boot washes and full overalls to change in to coming on and off the yard, we were asked not to go to the local feed suppliers (never went directly from yard) and a livery who runs a hairdressers even had people who owned horses cancelling appointments!!!

Until people can stop being so hysterical about it, yards will continue to keep it quiet!
