Hi All,

mentioning no names....

a friend of my mine's horse has got a swolling lump underhis chin (throut lash area) and the wound she picked the scab off its like a big hole type thing and puss is seeping out. he can still eat and although a bit not him self seems fine. no other signs of strangles...

but im terrible worried it could be she rang vet this morning and they said there is no current outbreak of it and if need be shell come out on monday! but i dont want my mate to wait that long im so worried for my horse and everyone elses!

i dont think shes told the YM either

i need some advice :(

:( is she ok now?

and i defo think it is wether theres an outbreak or not there will be soon if she doesnt get the vet out. im telling the YM tonight because im seriously worried for my horse i dont want him ill! and i have the most contact with my friends horse!!!!

:(

I find it hard to believe the vet said they would come out on Monday. I think the Yard Manager should be informed and the vet should be called out straight away. At least then you can have it confirmed one way or another.

i agree completly! i dont thisnk she actually spoke to the vet i think she spoke to the receptionist.

and i think it was more my mates idea to have her come out monday!

i just want to know for sure what we are dealing with.... as now i have canceled my lesson (one which i was really lookin g forward to) just incase as i dont want to spread it!

what would you do in my position?

x

Having seen a horse nearly die of this its a no brainer really. The vet needs to be out now. Remember also some vets have never seen strangles.

CALL THE VET NOW AND NOTIFY YARD MANAGER.....
Get off the computer and get on your phone :)

Well she had better take all precautions AND tell the YO and others in the yard, I would put a notice up ..... STRANGLES SUSPECT
Have a look at my posting on strangles precautions, first thing is to go and get a thermometer, if over 38, then there is trouble, but it may have passed this stage, it is surprising that she did not notice he was unwell, buy latex gloves, Marigolds, Bleach, do not share anything, that means anything, hose pipe, tap, hay, hay-net, field, stable tools, tack [stable isolation] anything at all, vet is very laid back, but most cases do not need any treatment. Monitor twice a day at 12 hour intervals, if shivering put on more rugs and call the vet out for emergency antibiotics.
The abcess can be poulticed with Animalintex, use vet wrap to hold it on, use disposable gloves and put in to another bag which must be disposed of carefully.
Only one person to go near him.
Buy antiseptic wipes for bathrooms, this will clean the car steering wheel and other such surfaces, change all clothing every time, and wash at 40 degrees.
The horse is highly infectious at this time, and anything in the stable should be disposed of in to rubble bags tied with string, and removed from the premises if possible.
STRANGLES IS HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS, ie spread by contact, that includes nasal spray.

thanks for quick replys.... im in work i cant do much and they wont come out as its not my horse! and YM doesnt asnwer his phone (leaves it in the caravan) so nothing i can do as i dont have anyone elses number (im new tot he Yard)

i have already told her 3 times to get the vet out immediatly!! and i certainly know how it spready even through water trogths!!! :(

i am telling the YM when i get there at half 5 but theres not much else i can do i suppose... i think im going to give her a text now see if she will get vet out tonight. i will try ringing vet later when i finish work see if they would come out based on what i think but i doubt it because im not his owner!

so worried! just want to come out of work and do everything i can!

I take it the YM doesnt know about this horse? If they do they want sacking! If they are in charge of the yard they need to at the very least move the horse away from others. Whether its their horse or not this needs doing straight away.

A lot of horses dont even get the symptoms of strangles, or they get a slight cold.

Tell her to get the vet out immediately!! As said before it is highly contagious spread very easily and the horse can die as a result!! If the horse has been out in the field with these symptoms the chances are some of the other horses will already have it, it spreads like wildfire!! We had it at our yard a few years ago and people not telling the truth saying thier horse had a cold/ virus and still turned it out!! Two of mine got it my old boy 30 at the time had to have his gutteral pouch washed twice not very nice to watch and very costly!

Yeah she survived but it progressed to b@stard strangles, we had to jeys fluid everyting and a burn our rubbish etc (not sure if this was compulsory but made the yo happy) x
Loads of people think that this is a disease which is a bit like a mild sore throat in humans, well it affects horses in different degrees, and the only definitive test of exposure is the blood test, or swab with PCR
http://www.equinescienceupdate.co.uk/strangl2.htm
This is the most difficult disease to deal with because so many horse are almost non symptomatic, also from previous my postings [cringe] a lot of people think it is part and parcel of pony ownership, NOT SO!
Horses can be "carriers" so have no symptoms but secrete live Steptococcus Equi intermittently, so no need to have been out and about, it may be in the herd already.
Horses may get the disease, and exhibit no obvious symptoms, but be shedding, they are usually identified by tempearatue changes, but only minor in some cases, so may be missed.

as far as i am aware she said she has not told him yet! but i have just text him letting him know and iv also said im keeping mine in untill she gets the vet out!

im going to call the vet in a min and see what they think then i may try ringing the YM if he answers! and i have also text the horses owner to say can she get vet out tonight as its better knowing!!

is there anything i should do for my horse?? im going to let everyone know tonight he could have suspected strangle through contact but its uncertain just as a precaution!

Your doing the right thing well done!

Out vet and yard staff told owners they could not come and see the Gutteral Pouch, but they knew better than to try and stop me!
It was ghastly, I have never seen a pony sedated and twitched, what is that about!
poor boy, I could have wept, ..........cruel and unnecessary.

thanks for all the replys guys youur all big help!!

i rang the vet she said nothing she can do unless owner tell her to come out :'( so im going to convince her to do it tonight!! im gonna try finish early to get marls in and sort him out and the vet has said to me keep mine isolated for 1 weeks and if showing no signs should be ok!

:(

ran YM he picked up! hes told the vets to come out! hopfully should know whats happend soon!

feel awful iv done this behind my mates back but i need to know!

Don't feel awful - your friend horse could be very seriously poorly, you've done her horse and all the other horses on the yard a big favour.

hi all just a quick update vet came out were still not 100% sure vet said she will not rule it as of where it is and we should get the results in the next few days!...

the horse has been isolated just incase ... but hes showing no symoptoms other than this lump!!

i have also isolated my horse no longer grazing for the next few days but ill excersie him for a few hours a night :)

completly agree! at least its getting sorted now even if i do feel a lil guilty about the whole vet and YM thing!

but atleast well know for sure soon :)

whats ussually the 1st sign is it the lump under their throuts? o

I know why you feel guilty but it was the best thing. We were in your friends position once with Murphy, it turned out to just be an abcess on the jaw but we didnt know whether it was strangles or not so had the vet out and the yard was put on lock down till the results came back and were checked, checked and checked again. We felt awful as someone was supposed to move two horses that weekend but better safe than sorry!

aw thanks for your reply well im leaning more towards the abses thing but i get so worked up and worried i didnt want to sit here and do nothing :(

glad your ponies ok though :)
x

Safe than sorry anyday :) He came good, but then we struggled to get him to out the stable, he decided that after living in a field for 6 years being a stabled horse 24/7 was very luxurious haha

I'm pretty sure horses with strangles should not be given antibiotics and it makes it spread through their body and they get abcesses all round their organs (Basta*d strangles)

Yes that is the thinking, originally no antibiotics used, then 18 hours later had to call out vet as horse was shivering, antibiotics then injected for five days.
He had disease for a very long time and was quite ill. Abscess were round the throat, nowhere else.
Quite a number of horses were given antibiotics
