Staples versus stitches

Not much use but my mare had staples in her stomach after her colic operation.
They were a bloody pain! The vets were slow in taking them out, and they ended up with a fw half in half out and kept catching on the swabs when I cleaned the infection she got.

Stitches are quicker.. thats about the only pro to be honest. The catch on stuff. have to be constetly cleaned and are generally a pain in the back side..

Stitches all the way!

Staples are much faster to put in. Great for all wounds that are not near joints. (ie areas of movement/tension). The wound will generally heal the same with either method being used.

staples are faster and I thought that stapled wounds healed quicker as they can hold the skin together more closely as you can put many more staples than stitches in.

Staples are faster to put in, don't pull through the skin and are less likely to get a reaction to them....

Although i've had two operations on my knee in the past - first time stitched, 2nd time stapled...stitches itched more whilst they were in but came out easily. Staples no bother while they were in but hurt like hell to take out - not a horse i no, but i imagine the principle are similar!
