Starch Levels

Over the years, I have probably tried all sorts of different feeds on the horses I have owned. As a result of this, I have enquired about starch levels as some companies do not list them. As I have a few that I have made a note of, I thought that I would share them with you as they may be of use to some of you.

Those who list starch levels on websites are :
Saracen
Allen and Page
Spillers

The starch levels (and some sugar levels) I am aware of are:

Dodson and Horrell
Equine Sensitive 16&
Leisure Mix 14%
16+ Mix 15% sugar 8%
high Fibre cubes 6%
Safe and Sound 8%

Badminton
Cool Mix 19%
Park Herbal 23%

Baileys
Hi Light Cubes 15%

Dengie
Hi Fi sugar level 8%

Spillers
Conditioning Fibre sugar level 4.5%
Cool Fibre sugar level 4.5%

Does anyone else know of the starch levels in feeds not mentioned? It may help others with feeding nightmares :)

Yes, some horses can react to starch levels in feeds. Mixes usually have higher starch levels than cubes because they contain more cereal.

Starch is also bad if your horse suffers from laminitis, ulcers, food related colic etc.

Starch is not easily digested by the horse but it effects horses differently. Some may not react at all.

I put these starch levels on here so that people were aware.
 
Thank you, I have a few figures that are probably out of date now, but when you see the figures written down in one place it makes it easy to see why some feeds adversely affect some horses.

I find it interesting to see the high levels in some feeds that are promoted as 'cool' or 'non heating', some are very high.

I agree!!!!

Its scary that some of these companies do not publish this information. A simple lesson that we should all enquire before we feed, as a little information goes a long way in ensuring our horses are kept healthy (and sane!).

Yikes! There's some high starch levels in some of those! :eek: I'm not overly surprised though, as I've never been a fan of D&H :rolleyes:

I think Baileys and Allen and Page are worse but in A&P's defence, they declare their levels.

I'm going to try the low starch/simple way this winter rather than veteran/conditioning mix. Compound feeds are getting ridiculously expensive!
