Ok so poor Stary went to the vets this morning for her x-rays and nerve blocks etc. I was thinking she's going to be a nightmare, but she was sooooo good bless her. Straight in the stocks and then another room for jabs etc, everyone thought she was sedated haha

Anywhooo - started with the clinical assesment again, trot ups, flexion etc and got the same result as last time, lame on right hind. So then in for x-rays on hock as this was Peters initial idea. Done a fair few scans, nothing realllyyy obvious but there was some slight swelling/changes in the lower area joint!

Next Peter decided to nerve block that area to see what affect it had - so one jab later and 20mins wait - and back to trotting up etc. Did some more flexion tests at various time intervals and she did get significantly better, enough for Peter to decide we are on the right track. He has also taken some bloods for tests etc to check for viruses or anything funny due to her temprement change!!

Outcome being - beginings of bone spavin in the right hind hock. He still wasnt 100% sure if this could be all the reason for her unwillingness to work but did explain things and maybe she's just a wimp for pain!!! Next step is, just waiting for blood results - then a high dose course of bute for a week with turnout - then Peter will come out and assess her on bute (well danilon). If an improvment then will start treatment with a new drug out to slow/stop the process and hopefully in a few wks/months she will return to normal!!! He didnt think it warrented surgery and wasnt that far gone...

BUT we will have to take it from here and just watch her improvement really. If not much improvement then we will check for other things or maybe get an MRI done. One good thing he did say was he saw no reason we couldnt breed from her, so thats good If theres not much improvement and Peter thinks a year of would do good then we will decide...

Anyway thats it for now, thanks for reading lol Star is now a lazy field horse for the time being....

Well we discuss it alot with the vet and he had things to say about it but the general jist was she doesnt have poor conformation etc and other reasons - but doesnt see any reason not to breed from her. BUT saying that, if she comes right in a month or so then we wont be doing that anyway...

Thats good news.We discussed spavins in earlier post .My horse had the surgery because he was so lame and really suffering. There is a article on vets posting about tildren you might want to read it might be the drug your vet wants to use.

Yes thats the drug

Had a chat to a girl up the yard and seems her horse had that drug for hock issues last October and has been good since..

Wheres that article then? I did say about the surgery option but he said thats more for further developed spavin...

I don't have any experience about spavins but it seems likely that the behavioural problems could easily be linked to the spavins. My boy pulled his hind suspensory a few years ago - didn't go lame, but knew something was wrong because he refused to go forward etc. He's a typical TB and always injured and normally the first sign with him is a change in temperament. Vet says he has a very low pain threshold and is a wimp!
Good luck.
