Hi, starting a worming programme on a horse (not mine) but owner does not know last time horse was wormed, but we know it was not in last 6-8 months. Very confused with the books I'm reading and would like to start a proper annual programme... Any suggestions or examples of your worming programme you can share please?

Based on what I have been reading we could try the suggestion before but it seems so complicated and like you have to worm so often. Growing up I was told to worm every 8-12 weeks and never had any teaching on all the different types of wormers so I am totally out of touch. A friend who is a vet recommends only worming once a year to stop resistence. My own horse had a worm count but I guess I need to dose him for tapeworm anyway.

Summer programme April to august (every 6 weeks)
Year 1 - benzimidazole wormer every 6 weeks
Year 2 - invermectin
Year 3 - pyrantel

Winter programme
Sept/oct - tapeworm (maybe pyratape p)
Oct - panacur guard
Dec -- invermectin
Feb - panacur guard
March - tapeworm wormer

Would dearly love some help! Running rings around myself reading about it all!

I wouldnt worm that much anymore. I rely on my wormcount lab and use praziquantel in autumn/spring and moxidectin for encysted redworm in autumn.

I use Westgate Labs for wormcounts - they provide the testing kit and the results come through very fast. They give worming advice too.

So far I haven't had to use wormer at all, except for tapeworm and encysted redworm which I'll be doing in the winter.

i get a worm count done once a year and worm if he needs it.
My vet said he had a very low count and to worm for tapeworm only.
I definately think worm count then worm according to the results is the way forward but as tapeworm cant be detected I will worm for that beginning of November.

Oriel... What wormer will you use? Or do you need to use 2 (thinking about my own horse that is worm counted)... And if I do 2 do I need to spread them out? Thanks
