I lost my horse tragically 3 months ago from grass sickness. i had been riding for over 10 years and had owned bluebell for 5 of those until he lost his life to grass sickness.

It has been a very upsetting past few months and i do miss riding but i didnt feel ready to take up riding again. i am not in the postition financally or emotionally to get another horse so was considering riding lessons however i was thinking of taking up side saddle instead as feel it would be starting afresh and i would be less likely to compare it to bluebell.

are there any recommendations of riding schools/instructors in the south east region, perferably kent?

also after years of riding how easy will it be to adjust to side saddle?

Very sorry to hear that you lost your horse. Grass sickness is an awful thing to see.

I have only ever actually ridden side saddle on a simulator, which was at Your Horse Live last year. It was such a great experience that I wuld definitely like to do it again (once I have got topsides of a few other things first!)

There are some side saddle riders on here, who will be able to give you more information, but in the meantime, have a look at the website for the Side Saddle Association. If there is not an instructor listed, they will be able to point you in the right direction. They are so passionate about getting new riders involved.

Hope this helps!

Sorry to hear about the loss of Bluebell :(

Your best bet would be to contact the Side Saddle Association to see if they know of any riding schools in your area (sorry, can't be of more help as I'm in Leicestershire!). Here is their website:

Some people "take" to side saddle and others don't. LOL, I only learned to ride side saddle a few years ago and took to it straight away but then some of my friends who had been riding "normal" the same length of time as me (about 25 years), hated it. If you have expressed an interest in it, then I'm sorry to say that you will probably take to it and then get yourself into debt buying a habit and saddle. :D

LOl, I rode on that too at YHL! I felt wobbly on it, it felt nothing like riding side saddle for real I found but to be fair, the saddle was a bit short for my long legs :)
