First of all before I write anything else I want to stress that this poll has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the Futurity as none of the venues ever chosen for them have vaccination restrictions so it is not an issue.

However, a group of friends are planning to hold a high profile event in the early autumn in which some foals and youngsters may well take part and the venue the organisers prefer at the moment has HBLB racecourse level vaccination restrictions on it and they wonder if this would adversely affect entries. I have to say that my feeling is that it would -- not least becuase the + 7 months needed to fulfill the first vaccination sequence would mean that even a foal born in the first week of January and vaccinated at 6 weeks old would barely be old enough to qualify -- but I suggested that I asked you HHOers your opinion as that would give a wider spread of input.

I would therefore be most grateful if you would respond by 10.00 am on Friday -- with comments if you wish (but please not When? Where? Who will be eligible? queries about the event as I am not at liberty to divulge them) as these would be appreciated too.

Thanking you in advance for all your help:-)

Ciss, correct me if I'm wrong, so many rules change so quickly, but it used to be that even for racecourses, as long as the first two jabs had been completed, you could compete there before the third jab. In which case, the first two jabs are perfectly feasible for breeders. (I always like to have them both done a couple of weeks before I wean as a matter of course)
If that rule has changed now, apologies, just delete this!

Hmmmm IME working on large studs and dealing with vets and working out vaccination schedules for 200+ horses every month, you are advised to NOT jab for Flu under the age of 5 months. Tet when born yes, but fly after 5 months of age.

Finn had his first jab at 5 months, 2nd at 6 months and will have the third later this year to complete his set and of course yearly thereafter. So being a July foal this was December and January for the first two. He was shown in hand at 3 months and had no vaccs other than the one the day he was born - tetanus and anti b's I think...

Have answered this as Tetanus only I never give multiple vaccinations as I do not like multiple insults especially on a young immune system. My own foals I am keeping I do not vaccinate for flu unless there is an outbreak, foals sold will have a separate flu vaccination course.

The Tetanus brand I use is 1st followed in 4 weeks then every 3 years!

Unfortunately I cannot find anywhere to do titre testing for horses but I have found with the dogs that puppies + 1 year is enough for life!

Just to clarify it is actually flu not flu/tet I am interested in. Sorry -- shouldn't really affect anyones responses though I would image.

Aaah, well it does for me as I vaccinate for Tet very early and leave the Flu course until their yearling year.

Had a youngster Flu jabbed as a weanling and he became very poorly immediately after. Flu-like symptoms. Put me off as he was just too young to handle that level of illness. He pulled through but I'd have prefer it if he hadn't had that set-back obviously. That said, that WAS 20+ years ago. I expect the vaccines are far improved these days

Yes it makes a big difference to me as well as we only do Tet as foals and then Flu once ridden or campaigned seriously inhand. If the question had remained Flu/Tet I wouldnt have taken part in the survey as I actually would not have been able to answer with any clarity.
