Hi all, currently I am working out options for my life as I’m currently a late teen just out of GCSEs and working in the industry away from home!

I have gone through a lot of different options of career and have already tried a few and have landed on horse dealing for quite a while now.

I would love to start up this sort of Business however need some guidance as I’m not really sure where to start!!

Currently I am doing an apprenticeship on a large competition livery yard miles away from home and am living on site, I also am already buying and selling horses however they each take around a year as I have been buying them as late 3/early 4yr olds. (Also saving as much money as possible to help rent a yard when the time comes) Curious if anyone has any tips or possibly a next step to get into this sort of thing? Maybe my lvl3 apprenticeship on a dealers yard and then doing a teaching course?

Here’s how I’d think about next steps:
  • Keep building skills, but also relationships. The horse world runs a lot on who knows who, especially if you’re sourcing or selling privately.
  • Don’t sleep on your online presence. Even just a basic site and Instagram with clean photos, sale videos, and updates on what you’re doing can set you apart from the "word-of-mouth only" crowd.
  • If you’re leaning toward the teaching route too, then yeah, doing a coaching qualification like BHS Stage 3 or similar makes sense. That could open up lessons, clinics, and another income stream down the line.
Also, if you do plan on building the business seriously, learning a bit about how people in trust-heavy industries (like law or healthcare) market themselves online is weirdly useful. Here’s a pretty sharp breakdown of how SEO works for professional services from Fortress, an SEO agency: https://fortressgrowth.com/seo-for-lawyers/personal-injury-lawyer-seo/

If you’re planning on being a dealer honesty is seriously good at selling. People like knowing what they’re getting into.

Basically, have a look at adverts in your area and see how long they’re up for to see what sells locally/wherever you want to set up.

Seriously well done on already getting on with life, sounds like you’re hardworking and doing a good job. It’s a bit daunting for me seeing someone my age who has their life laid out and plans in place, while I’m still stuck with vague and unrealistic ideas 😂

Not sure what you are currently buying and selling but there's a huge untapped market for bombproof cobs for ladies of a certain age.

I am regularly asked if I'm selling mine by people who've seen them in heavy traffic, one local lady started offering silly money and I had to get a friend to tell her to stop before I got tempted 😂

Plenty of people with money to spend looking for an honestly described cob. Don't need to be expensive purchases for you, no one cares about breeding or looks as long as they're healthy and very sensible.
