Starting to get me down a little

Hector has been on box rest for 6 weeks now, he came in from the field with some cuts to his pastern and his leg swelled to massive propertions.

Cellulitis diagnosed. after 3 weeks of powder antibiotics not working, he went in for x rays, found the infection was quite deep and his leg was filled with fluid.

Now on Baytril and our second week, hes now sound but theres still heat and swelling around the fetlock area. The cuts and grazes have been oozing a clear yellow substance, Vet told me not to bandage so ive been cleaning it

Where the leg is swelling and he was clipped for x rays its now all scabby and scurfy, whether this is the infection trying to get out or what I dont know.

Hes nearly out of baytril and will be seeign the vet in the week hopefully. Sorry for the whinge, it just seems so long for what was a field accident to clear up.

Any advice on something that might soothe his leg? or help the healing process, I did think about getting some tea tree cream when the shops open as Ive used it before and it seems to have good healing properties

Aloe Vera gel (cheapest from from Holland and Barrett) is very soothing to the skin and I have seen research that says it increases skin cell growth by a third, so that might be good? I use it on my horses.
 
Gold label's Wonder Gel - it's aloe vera based but contains tea tree and loads of other good herby substances. It worked well on my boy's gravel rash in the summer and he got no infection.
 
Hi summer i think i have private messaged you ref Pelvis problems on a diff post! But funnily enough i sold a horse earlier this yr who has had pretty much the same problems as your horse. A Injury through getting caught in a fence got infected in his pastern . Only small wounds but before long his whole leg was like an elephants.. Cellulitus also diagnosed and after weeks of it coming and going it ended up forming a scab on his hock that actually bust one day while walking around the yard Horrific! But better out than in according to the vet.It turns out he had a dep infection in one of the bursa of his hock that had tracked up from the pastern. So that could possibly be whats happening to yours, Anyway cold hosing three times a day box rest and anti biotics but it did take a while! If you think that it may be the infection getting ready to burst could you tub it in salt water help draw it out?
 
hmm, I dunno if its trying to burst it seems to spread around, although it is weird how everything is still weeping, I may well try the salt water see if anything happens it does look like it needs drawing out.

Yes this is very similar to my old horse the wounds were weeping for about three weeks, the swelling would be worse on some days and also seemed to move up and down the leg. It eventually settled at the hock leaving it about twice the size of theother,but this was capped previously so it was his weak spot. He also wasnt lme on it at all really .
It s worth a try after all if its not going to hurt the wounds that are still weeping if nothing else.
 
I had a horse that got celulitous from turnout socks, I had to hibiscrub his legs everyother day with hot water, dry with towels and then plaster this green demolene gel onto it and also he had to have antibiotic injections every day for 7 days. when his legs went scabby and dry I had to clip his legs out. The other cream that I used when the green gel ran out was NAF MSM which was wonderful.
 
I really wonder why my horse wasnt given anitibiotic injections in the first place and why they gave me nothing to put on it. Was just told to keep it clean and hibiscrub it

I swear by anything by NAF so will give that a try thanks
