Ive just gone threw my third dentist and my poor Amber and i am mighty P"^^%$ off now.

why is it they are totally qualified and yet still dont do the job properly and its not just dentist its vet and back people. im just starting to get really annoyed that these people all get into these proffesions (sp) and yet dont try to become the best thay can be and lead owners on and take there money or give STUPID advise!

Ive just had it.The last two years has been a big battle with my two one gettin diagnosed with cushing and lami and being bloady hard to get over. What with first vet telling me she had a bad back and turn her out as much as possible and get a back person out, Good job i didnt listen as then turned to another vet and she was diagnosed with lami in all four feet and cushing with rotation in both fronts. So if i did listen im sure she wouldnt be here as she nearly didnt make it.

Then Amber had a bad fall and does both hind suspensorys was sent to newmarket to be told im just seeing things its almost like i want it to be there and there is nothing wrong with her to finally find out from my vet that she had done both hind suspensorys.

Then same with back people after operation on ambers legs she went threw a real bad patch with the stress of op and being bought back into work slowly.I was told by two back people nothing can be done turn her away she is unpredictable when all she was doing was trying to bite them because she was in alot of pain when they were touching her where it hurt, finally get someone else with a diffrent tecnique (bowen) and she is sorted within 3 weekly treatments and she is back to her normal cool carm self.

And the latest with the dentists .Have used this women since amber was 3 and used her on twinkle also.So when having back done back person noticed that amber had muscle on her forhead bigger on one side than the other which proberly means she has big issues balance wise as there is alot of difference between the two halfs, also had just started to hear a funny grinding noise when she was eating her hay and had got worse in her contact issues so was already thinking about getting the dentist out so that just confirmed it. She was only done 3 months ago anyway and has always been done on time. so i think right call someone else out as she might not have been doing them right, so i do. A very well respected qualified dentist that ALOT of people use were i am so he come out and does her teeth whilst slagging last person off as she obviusly hasnt done a good job and telling me how these people are just wrong not doing them properly.

so teeth are done......... yeah right

next day she is being super picky with her feed (which is not like her she is a ganit)

so i take notice and keep an eye on her for the next few days she gets worse and worse 3 days later not really eating it at all and is going off her hay.

so what do you do i ring a friend as i remember her telling me she was getting a dentist out that she hadnt used yet. so ring her and she tells me her horse has transformed since this new man has done her horse so i get his number and ring him straight away he come out next day for me as emergency.

long story short he almost fainted when i again told him they were only done 5 days ago he couldnt believe it he couldnt see that he had doen anything wrong to make her go off feed but he had obviusly disturbed somting to irritate what hadnt been done.

he did say that these are long standing issues that have gotten worse over a perriod of time but both dentist hadnt done nothing about it.

she had LOTS of big hooks on most of back teeth and one had even indented into another tooth the shape of the hooks he said she was very sore which she was needed sedating
by vet which she has never needed before it took him just over and hour to do her.he was just discusted as am i that to qaulified dentist have done her and left her the way she was knowing that she cant speak to say its hurting just has to wait for it to get really bad for owner to notice slight things before they get seen again.

ive since got on her and all i can say is WOW i cant believe the diffrence all the problems we had with her not wanting to take the contact out have all gone. she is going so so so nice now.

i just feel hurt and let down that you put all your trust in these people to help your horses and they just take your money and dont give a crap.

i no its not everyone (and a big praise to those that do care and love there jobs)

but those that keep doing this are really starting to get to me and there is just nothing that you can do to stop them from doing it to other peoples pets that they love and care for.

sorry big rant over just needed to get that out there.
well done for making it this far.

It is very hard isnt it? I find its often the people with the biggest mouths that know the least. I know of many 'professionals' - physios, dentists, saddle fitters that are all supposedly qualifid but like you say are only interested in the money and dont ever try to be better.

Unfortunately there are very few horsey people, professionals included, that put the horses welfare first. Over and above ANYTHING else.

Well done you though for persevering and trying to do the best for your horses

WOW no wonder your peed off! I would be too! I know all too well the ignorance of money grabbing dentists/vets and back people that really dont have a clue so i sympathise! Hope your girlies ok now

i notice you are in Essex, who was this amazing dentist man? Do you think he'll come up to Ipswich Suffolk??

As for the professional thing, I think sometimes these things do happen, and i think its awful they would leave your horse like that!

i think i could probably hazard a guess at the good dentist man I have had experience of many of the local dentists and have seen many horses locally who have been found to have major issues with teeth. One had been seen anually by a dentist for 10 years and when she changed dentist (to guy i use) he found such a bit hook on back that it was a miracle the horse could chew at all. He had been hard to keep weight on for years but as dentist had seen horse the owner assumed all was ok! It is ridiculous that these people continue practising as for an owner it is heartbreaking when you think you are doing your best only to find out the horse has been in discomfort. This particular horse had to have multiple sessions at the vets under sedation to reduce the hook it really was ridiculous.

I am myself a massage therapist but pride myself on my honest approach to the clients I see. If i assess the horse and feel I cant help then I walk away having recomended another form of therapy/saddle fitter/dentist etc. As a professional these things will always catch up with you and reputation goes a long way.

It is also highly unprofessional to slag of other professionals whilst on the job. It should never be done!!!! They wouldn't like it if someone was slagging them off and it ruins the professional image.

I really hope you have more luck in future. Often once you have found people that help (which it sounds like you have with bowen and dentist) stick with them like glue!! Must have been so frustrating.

If you ever need a particular professional in the area PM me as I know a few and can pass on my reccomendations (the ones that do my own horses). I obviously wont put down anyone elses work ever as it is not the way I do things but I can give you numbers for the people I have used who I have found good. :-)

thanks guys.

touch wood all is well with both of them finally!

just really got to me when its happened again and again, just cant believe they get away with it such a shame for the horses as they really cant do anything about it just have to put up with it they are so loyal!

mistral pm me if you want his number he goes all round country was in scotland last week so sure he will come to you!

so wish we could make a dont touch with a barge poll list and a good list

I know how you feel - i left my last vets because they were taking the mickey out of me - i love my horses and have done far more than i should have in paying for bizzare treatments - i ended up paying for numerous tests because we had a virus on our yard, when i pressed the vet about the number of tests i was having i was horrified when he said "well it will help us diagnose the strain if the rest of the yard gets it" - i pressed and was told that the cultures would not be back in time to hlep mine and they were already on a course of antibiotics....

Equitune thanks

I defenitly will be sticking to them like glue lol

But thanks will defenitly keep you in mind if ever i come across another problem thanks.

im glad you managed to get a good dentist in the end,yes unfortunately the word qualified doesnt always mean they are good,it turns into a political and money thing half the time and the thrill of having a few letters after thier name, iam a dentist and get as emotional as the owners when the horse improves, behaves well, can eat alot better and rides better after previous dentists/vets have not done such a great job, with any job there are good and bad workers its just about finding the best person for that job sometimes you do have to kiss a few frogs so to speak to find the person that does best for you and your horse,i love my job and at the end of the day my job is the welfare of the horse to make him more comfortable in the mouth and to be able to eat properly, the fact that the horse will ride better is a bonus

Really glad you have found a good dentist. It sucks that people take advantage of those of us who trust them to do the best for our horses. I only take on personal recommendation now, and our dentist is very good. He shows us what he is doing and explains it all, and my friend is a vet so I know I can trust her.
