The 13yo JRT is going into the vets tomorrow to have his teeth scraped under a GA. He's to be there for 8am. He's a healthy dog for his age, apart from his manky teeth.

I know that he's not to have food from 8pm tonight, but I've had a brain f@rt and can't remember the advice re access to water :o. Can he have access to his water bowl all night, as I'd rather not restrict it in the current heatwave if poss?

The vets are closed except for emergencies, being a Sunday, so I'd rather not mither them. Thanks in advance.

As cgo3 says, we pick the water bowl up in the morning. In this weather I would take them out early and let them have a drink when they come back in and then withdraw it. Maybe 6am ish?

No need to withdraw water - most clinics will give the dog water in their cage when they arrive anyway

Our vets do always ask that water is withdrawn a couple of hours beforehand.

Hence "most" - there's no reason to withdraw it really with modern anesthetics. Unless the vet specified withholding water I wouldn't, especially when it's this warm

Thanks, folks. I think I'll compromise and take his water away at 7am, after he's been out with me doing the horses. He'll probably have a drink then when he comes back in, before he sits looking expectantly at his empty food bowl! I don't want him dehydrated in this heat.

I'll brief the vet receptionist as to exactly what I've done, just in case.

Quick update - all went well yesterday. T was already pretty perky when I picked him up at 4.30pm, although he was under vets orders to be kept quiet for the rest of the day. He now has lovely clean white teeth again, and no extractions were necessary.

If anyone else is wondering about getting teeth scraped on a healthy elderly dog, then I'd suggest go for it. It cost less than I thought, too (forgot to ask how much in advance). £211 inc pre GA blood screen, iv drip, GA and scraping.
