stay away shows ...

I took my mare to Lincoln one year and stayed over. I took her usual gear but she was cool about it and not even flirty, despite being between 2 geldings. Just helped riding her around the showground and familiarising her, letting her get her bearings. She was really tired though on the way home and didn't even eat her net, I think she slept the whole way home, bless her.

I took Arch away for his first ever over night stay back in April. I took all his belongings and his teddy bear!

He was in a big barn all on his own, so I took a little radio and left it on for him all night.

It surprised me how calm my lad was the first time we stayed away, he really took it in his stride tbh. As did OH's mare when we took her on a weekend camp. THink because lots of other horses there are very chilled about it that tends to settle the more nervous ones.

Stinky is a chilled youngster so he just walked into the stables at Keyso and had his grub and went to sleep.

Only thing I have noticed is that when he is away from home, as soon as he sees me, he gives a big neigh - something he rarely does at home.

I do take his ball and lick so he can be kept occupied whilst in.

Hopefully the other horses will be used to staying away and not kicking up a fuss so yours will just settle in.

Some horses won't drink "strange" water when they're away. If yours is one of those, then a tip is to get them used to something like apple squash in their water at home, then when they're away, you can make it seem more homely by adding it there too!
The best thing you can do is be as "chilled" as possible yourself...

One of mine can be a bit funny about drinking "away" water so I make sure I always have another bucket full of water with sugar beet water added - can also hide electrolytes in it too :P He also picks really badly at his feed so I don't add any wet to it (ie. no sugar beet so in his case it'd just be cubes and a bit of chaff) and leave it in with him all night. It won't go yucky because its not wet. He'll at least pick all night!

I guess just try and keep everything the same, like try to stick to your usual feeding times etc. if you can.

hi, just been to first stay away champ. what a laugh! umm i'd take ur own hay if he's on hay cos if they sell anythign it'll probably only be haylage..

i would say take a stable ball or likit but as ur only staying the night- shouldn't be too bad.

( take some nice clothes for the evening, theres lots of night life at the new year- apparently) xx
