I just wondered if those of you without a lorry manage to go to away shows? I currently have a trailer and we are looking into getting a lorry with living - but not sure if we'll be able to afford it, plus it seems like alot of money and hassle for just one horse.

So, what does everyone else do? Pitch a tent?

Ideas?

When I was a teenager I used to sleep in the trailer whilst my parents got a hotel room! T'was a bit smelly and chilly though

I used to stay in a tent

But in mid-april staying away usually at wales and west used to sleep in the Rangey (it still has better mod coms than the lorry

When I was a lot younger..... I used to sleep in the back of my trailer.

I only have one horse and a lorry and it is worth it. It isn't just when you stay away at shows that it is nicer, but also going to everyday shows is easier.

I,ve stayed in the trailer on one of those metal camp beds but would advise mucking it out and disinfecting it as SOON as you get there so it's got all day to air.

I only did it in summer though

Ive slept in my equitrek in the tack room( small model!!) and in the back of it. Also kipped in the back of the wagon too. Tents are ok as long as the trailer or car is secure enough to air and store your tack. Leather seated breeches in damp weather + long grass + unbalanced me = not fun!

My mum and sister slept in the back of our classy old white transit van on a blow up last summer!! Mum said the only problem was when my sister wriggled in her sleep Mum go the wave effect. To quote her 'Ok for one night, but pretty grim at least it was just better than the trailer and not too smelly.'

Plus at they got to go and I got to work...roughing it for a night for a comp. is better than working anyday!!

i have a trailer, at this moment in currently having issues with the fact i want to go to hickstead.

i usually have a friend who goes to an away show with me. but at the moment i havent got anyone i know going.

so i may be staying in the travel lodge nearby!

I either rough it in the trailer! on air bed! its ok in the summer. or sleep on floor in friends lorry.

Lorries are great - but expensive. so for the amount of away shows i do the trailer is fine!

Only got my lorry a couple of months ago, before that it was tents! any weather, the lure of a getting away for weekend to compete far outweighed the cold!!

Have also slept in mates lorry that had no living, on the straw, was extremely warm!!

Transit vans are also very good!!

I stayed at nearby travel lodge, usually big car park, if you didn't want to leave your trailor on showground/event ground. I never left the horses early and was always sad to leave as the atmosphere, bbq's etc etc, always looked too good to miss out on!!

I sleep in the trailer.

I have a tent, but it is tiring putting up and taking it down again at the end of the show when all you want to do is get off home (I remember it well). Also the trailer is off the ground. It isn't smelly, I take an old horse rug (clean) to put down as a rug. I have a lantern and a radio and have one of those little gas rings so I can have hot water. I am quite careful and safety consious re bits of hay, etc. I don't want to get incinerated.
I have been reasonably comfortable doing Trec or shows/clinic. It isn't luxurious and you can't wash properly but who cares for a couple of days?

"What is the first thing you should do when you get home?" Answer - "Kiss your husband." Well in my case it is have a bath FIRST!
