Staying away in horsebox for a whole week

Thanks guys. You've all been most helpful.

Am sooooo excited about it!

I can't add any more suggestions than those excellent ones already made, but just wanted to say have the most brilliant time ;-)) and of course......... Good Luck!

Lots of cheapo plastic bags for rubbish, so that you can keep taking it with you as you leave, it clutters the place up terribly and we never seemed to have enough :-)

I find a lantern type torch is great at these sites - otherwise you find yourself with your torch between your teeth when using the loos in the dark!

Unwrap everything for the fridge and put in freezer bags - you get much more in the fridge that way.

We take a spare leisure battery as a back up. One usually lasts us a week, but just in case..

Further to this, I have a horseware baseball cap with led lights in the brim, it was awesome for stay away shows, leaves your hands free for everything, great for mucking out. Saw some as 'fishing caps' in Aldi yesterday

More great stuff guys. Just found out not doing dressage till Wednesday so one more day at home to prepare as won't travel up till Tuesday.

No experience but would like to add to the chorus of good lucks. Maybe binliners would be a good thing to take? Very good for rubbish and storing dirty stuff and acceptable as emergency waterproofing.

A friend of mine takes a slow cooker, bungs food in that in the morming and when she is finished in the evening its all ready. Saves time and she says is so filling and yummy.

Good luck :)

has anyone suggested taking a gazebo? or large tent (or the coleman event shelter?) put it up beside the lorry and you had somewhere outside to put things. we have picnic tables (the folding 4 seater type one) to put food on, then folding camp chairs dotted around. plus when its very sunny(!) you can have shade and when its wet you've got somewhere to leave wet stuff out of the lorry

just to add

the foam floor mats are a great idea, worth having one as a spare for the showers as you can put it down after you get out of the shower to stand on the floor so your clothes don't end up wet.

Perhaps not so crucial given the weather forecast for next week :( but a gazebo was almost literally a life saver when we went to a five day show in 30deg temps last summer. My OH isn't in the best of health so it was somewhere for him to sit in the shade when he needed a rest, created extra shadows to keep the horse cool when he was standing by the lorry being show ring- prepped, was somewhere for me to recover after the classes, somewhere to keep my jacket and boots handy but out of the sun etc etc etc. Well worth getting one and keeping it at the yard in case we get a summer this year!

I have an awning on the lorry :-) Hope weather forecast perks up for Badminton. It will be less of an experience if it chucks it down with rain all week.

If you are worried about being cold at night and don't have heating in the lorry, do make sure you close all windows in the lorry (including cab and horse area) and put the ramp up as soon as horse is off and horse area mucked out. We've found it makes a big difference to how warm the living stays, and obviously make sure you don't leave the door open more than necessary. If you wait till it starts getting chilly before you shut the windows, then it will be too late!

I once had to stay in a lorry for two weeks, a week grooming at scope then swap a horse and a week at burgley. Best tip is keep it clean, wash up after yourself and store as much as you can away. Once you get there clean the lorry out lock up the ramp and open you petitions, I then move everything into the back out of the living it gives you more space. Have somewhere for boots take some slippers and try to get into the habit of swapping shoes.

Just a thought, if the temporary stables are in a marquee on grass, you may find you don't need quite as much bedding anyway as there is no concrete underneath to damage the horse...

Thank you for bumping Honey08 - I've got lots of useful tips and a few items added to my list! :)
