Hello All,

After reading some threads on here i have made my own steamer using a paper steamer and some plastic drums!

I must admit it is great, and i dont know what i would have done if id of still been soaking with all this snow and frost!

My question is, how long should you steam the hay for, i have a timer set to go on twice a day for about a hour and a half. The steamer takes about 20 min to heat up so i would say its steaming for a good hour.

Is this to long or not long enough? what does everyone else steam for?

Thanks in advance

We have a home made steamer on my yard. I don't allow soaked hay on the yard for a number of reasons and anyway the horses prefer their hay steamed. We made our steamer out of a rain water butt and wall paper stripper!
20 minutes seems to be ok for a medium size net but it depends on the size of the hay net and how densely packed it is. I guess you need to have a feel of the hay and make sure it is steamed through - trial and error!
I also fill my steamer with boiled water from the kettle. If you are able to do this, saves loads of time - and electric!
