I have recently acquired a haysteamer. How long do people steam hay for?is it likely to affect the nutritional content of the hay if steamed for too long?all advice greatly appreciated!!
its retains nutrients and minerals which are lost from soaking - think like steaming vegetables - keeps nutrients in.
Average time of 35-40 mins I think, depending on whether its at full steam or how compressed the hay is. pouring water on it first will speed it up a bit.
Really good for RAO
My friend did her dissertation on it at uni - im not a haysteamer nerd or anything!
Insted of buying a hay steamer i just got an old plastic chaff bag and put about 1 litre of hot water in it put the hay in it and sealed the top of the bag with a hair band. Works fine!!
Will not loose any nutritional content if steamed for less than 12 hours, but it will start loosing it after this time.
Thing that worries me about putting hay in a plastic bag and then pouring boiling water on it is the possible release of nasty chemicals from the plastic itself from the boiling water - can anyone put me right on that?
