I am looking for some steel toe cap boots for the winter as have busted the same toes twice in about 4 months and am ever so slightly paranoid about being stomped on..

I was wondering about rigger boots but they are not too lady like :) - does anyone else use anything - doesnt have to be of horsey make as this adds ££ sometimes, just want something practical and SAFE ..

Any suggestions welcome - thanks..

I recommend the ones by Just Toggs. They are incredibly light and comfortable as well as waterproof. I am on my third pair! They are only around £40 but I do get through a pair every 6 months or so but I wear them every day for many hours on the yard. I find rigger boots and other steel toecap boots I've tried, far too heavy.

I wear steel toe caps all day for my work.

You can get some really comfortable ones that are designed like a trainer.
Would advise you to get ones with a fairly wide toe cap otherwise they will rub ( don't forget you'll have thick socks on in winter!)

Try searching on the internet for safety footwear or if you are local to an ex army and navy store they usually have some good ones at reasonable prices.

Also not sure if you are aware but you can get steel toe cap wellies!

All these other boots are Im sure great.

BUT think about if you are on a soft surface and get stomped on, your toes can be decapitated by the steel toe cap if it is just on the top of the shoe :-OO think Id rather have the bruised/broken toe!

For that reason I only ever get the Equitector ones, as in these the protection goes all the way around, and means they are safe on soft ground like a stable or manege as well as hard ground. And they arent clumpy like a lot of the others, they are quite slim and feminine looking.

After getting stood on twice in a week by my (thankfully unshod) Clydesdale X I recently had the very same dilemma. I have sensitive feet so was dubious about buying work boots but found myself in our local country store trying on a pair of Dickies "Fury" boots which are very reasonably priced and I have to say are very comfortable.

Yes, they are a little on the clumpy side BUT I feel that is a small price to pay for protecting my toes - AND they are waterproof and have a great chunky sole for gripping in mud in the winter. I've not had a hint of soreness and they are great value for money. I'm amazed at my new found confidence around my three in the field... I never realised before how much I guarded my feet! :D A very worthwhile investment....

I have rigger boots, they are cheap, fleece lined so warm and cosy and comfortable. Riggers are designed to cope with heavy plant running over them, so no worries about the toes going through and chopping your toes off!
I have worm them for years for work, so I was already used to the weight of them x

another vote for rigger boots lol!! love mine in the winter and they are lady ones so not ridiculously huge, :) there's something strangely satisfying about stomping about in rigger boots while everyone else is skidding about in wellies and girly boots lol:D

Arrrh didnt realise you could get "lady" rigger boots .. quite logical really, just never thought about it ...will have a look on internet tomorrow and see what I can find...

Thank you everyone for your suggestions... heres to warm feet, staying upright in the winter and no more squashed toes.. (hopefully :D )

Ive found the Jallatte riggers are by far the lightest and very comfy and the more you abuse them the more comfy they get!!! , quite expensive at around £60 but far better than the cheap ones you get at the builders merchants, mine seem to last about a year of all day wear ..

mountain horse protective rider boots are great to ride in, they are all i wear these days, but they are heavy so if you want something delicate, dont get them, they are work boots...

/\

This - I also wear mine to walk the dpgs in when it isn't torrential rain - so probably 9 months of the year as well the riding/turning out etc etc and they last me approx 2 years. wouldn't have anything else now :)

I have the Mountain Horse ones too. had them for 5 years or so, and they are very comfortable (also wear them for walking the dogs), and have lasted brilliantly despite my sorry lack of leathercare with them!

Another vote for the mountain horse boots. I wear mine all day, every day, and get about 18months out of them. But I am horribly neglectful of them :(

I've been looking in this in the last few days because one of my daughters is about to start a course that requires steel toe cap boots. Equitector seem to be the best on the market for the reasons lachlanandmarcus has explained above, the other safety boots are designed to save your toes if a heavy object falls on them but are not designed to save your foot from a crushing injury.

So my daughter and I will order something from this range http://www.equitector.com/product_detail.cfm?cat=2&product=30

I have had my mountain horse boots for about five years now! and still going strong, they are a short boot and Ideal for riding, not that I do now, but they are a very good yard boot and waterproof!

Agree with this. I am on my fifth pair now, they are fantastic, comfortable from the outset, need no breaking in, but they are clumpy!

I wear mine everywhere! Great for walking youngsters/dogs/shopping :p

Can't recommend them highly enough!

Another vote for Equitector and great for riding in too. The only thing I will say about any steel toe-capped boots is, if you get a zap from an electric fence you know you've had one!

Another big Equitector fan here. I'm on my third pair (in 15 years:)) and the only time I didn't wear them for bringing in (because I was in a rush) I got stomped on and broke a toe.

They are cool in summer, warm in winter, not too heavy, comfortable to stand around in all day and good for riding in too. I'm not the greatest at taking care of them but they seem to cope with the odd wipe down with saddle soap when I'm tack cleaning.

i highly recommend Mountain Horse steel toe caps, i bought some 2 years ago and there still in everyday use. They are extremely comfortable and the only short boots i will wear at the yard.
