Stella has been in a car crash

It happened half an hour ago, on the drive back from her boarding facility. All of the dogs and driver are apparently okay, and aside from the van's inoperable state, it doesn't appear serious, but I am so paranoid that she hit her head on the crate during impact (a serious head trauma was the reason behind the loss of her right eye).

The driver and dogs are more than two hours north of the city and waiting for the arrival of a replacement rental van. I am going to be so worried until she arrives back in New York

When she comes back, if possible do loads of positive association stuff with vehicles so that she does not develop fright, I don't know if you have a car?

Yes, we have a car. I am floored with flu, but my husband has left a message with a company employee, offering to drive up and transport Stella and some of the other dogs back to the city if a rental van is not easily available.

They're about thirty minutes of a town called Poughkeepsie, where it's snowing, and -5c today but -10 with windchill. I really hope she can shelter in the back of the van.
 
Oh no! Poor Stella. I really hope she's ok and not too traumatised by her ordeal.

Poor poppet. What a worrying time for you.
 
That is very good of him.
Sounds like a nightmare but like you say, hopefully they will all be secure enough in there. Hope both of the drivers will be OK too.

Like I say if she is a wee bit nervous when she comes back, after she calms down try and make the car a fun place to be, feed her in there etc for a while if possible.

I'm on pins. We haven't been able to speak to anyone since the secretary contacted me. Local traffic reports point to two crashes in the area today, one of which was between a truck and a car, and was described as "serious" for the car driver. My husband assures me that a van would never be described as a truck in American parlance, but even he's a bit concerned.
 
So I just spoke to someone, and the van basically ran over some black ice, then skidded out of control and its right side hit the central barrier on the highway; I don't know how fast they were travelling, but it was probably between 40 and 50 mph.

The dogs are reportedly in good physical condition, and a rental van has been sourced. Once Stella is home in a couple of hours, I'll post an update. Apparently a vet's visit won't be necessary, but I may run her in tomorrow to check all is well with her eye pressure, just in case she knocked her head on impact.

The dogs are back on the road in a replacement van, and should arrive back in NYC in two hours. I don't know when Stella will be dropped off, as there are multiple dogs travelling back today.

An update:

Though the dogs were checked at the scene, it was pretty hard to do in the pitch dark and with nine animals to check. As soon as Stella got inside the apartment, I noticed a lump on her forehead, so we went to the hospital. Once there, she started holding her eye closed. Turns out she has a corneal abrasion in her left eye

It is very superficial, though, so with meds and antibiotics it should heal in a matter of days, when we need to take her for a re-check. The lump on her forehead doesn't seem to be causing her any concern, and the ER vet did some checks for brain swelling and glaucoma (neither of which were found).

In addition, she has some swelling on her tail and a big welt on her hip. I'm sure she's in shock, so if she appears to be stiff or in pain with these tomorrow, it'll be back to the hospital.

I think she, the other dogs, and the driver, had a lucky escape (the car spun out at 50 mph and rotated before colliding with the central barrier). Thank god for crates, that's all I have to say.

Sounds like they all had a lucky escape. I hope she is feeling a lot better today and not too stiff. I can imagine how you felt when you realised she had bumped her head

The conehead is still fast asleep. Last night she ate her dinner, drank some water, and peed, so I guess she isn't feeling too bad.

To those who drive with their dogs loose in a car, please don't. Without the crate, Stella would have been killed.
