I was wondering if anyone has any experience in using stem cell for injured tendons/ligaments and if so whether it worked?

I have the possibility to do it with my best horse who has torn his check ligament and dont really know much about it or its success rate so any info appreciated....

Went to a vet talk on this about a year ago and the general vibe was that it was amazing and is a real breakthrough. Have no personal experience but know Marsh Mayfly had this treatment and was back competing. At the vet talk it was stressed that you had to give them just as much time off as if they had not had stem cell treatment. I think because the scans can look so good so quickly with this system people think it is ok to start "normal" work and it backfires. I would say go for it if you can afford it!

Well Song (my eventer) had it almost a year to the day last year. He had it foir a small tear in his tendon about 1/10. He was good for all his lead out and then turnout - they now believe turn out is better than box rest so after the inital box rest he was out in a small paddock that increased in sive about every other week.

He started ridden work about 4 months ago and had his 1st competition last friday - Sjing 1m 1st round, 1.10 2nd round both with about 14/15 jumping efforts and has come out fine. I will have one final scan in about 2 week to see how it is and then he should be eventing on the 12th Sept, back at Novice.

Hope this helps

And heres a picture of his leg

Is this the same/similar to A-cell treatment? If so, then I have experienced it and would highly recommend it!

One of my old jumping ponies injured is digital flexor tendon on his hind leg when another horse kicked him, scraping down his back leg and exposing the tendon. He was treated with a-cell and made a full recovery, returning to full work in a matter of months- i think it was 5/6. The scans dont show any scar tissue. He carried on showjumping and pony clubbing and is still doing it now at 17!

If we had used any other method of treatment, he may not have recovered at all, as he escaped from his stable shortly after the treatment and galloped off down the field. Thankfully, as the a-cell had already started to heal the tendon, no further damage was done. Some treatments actually weaken the tendon before it repairs and if he had had this treatment then he would have probably ended up retired or worse!

Sorry for the long post!

Works a treat, was used on a friends open team chase horse on his tendon and it's healed good as new. Friends hubby is an equine vet! Was done I think three years ago now when he was 17 and is still going strong

thanks everybody for all the info, i am very grateful. i think we r going to try it because he first tore it 4 months ago on the outside and then on monday night in his box tore it in the same place on the inside

I think we have to give it a go and if it doesnt work then at least ive done everything i can to get him right again...and if it does then it will be amazing.

I believe they're also going to start using it on human athletes as it's been so successful in equines, there was a very short news snippet in H&H a couple of months ago

I had it done on an old horse which now has a new owner but i know hes going very well, is out competing and he has no other problems as of yet! (he did a suspensory ligament)
