Steriod injection into fetlock joint due to djd

Exrace horse is lame in right foreleg in his fetlock joint he has djd (degintaive jonit disease) the vet finks its due to wear and tear. he is goin to ahve seriod injection into this joint. has anyone had this doen before and what work are there horses in? Peoplewith exraces having these problems? Do they work?

Welcome to the Forum LM. Many horses develop djd due to wear and tear, not just TBs. My Highland x had been a very reliable trekking horse so unsurprisingly developed djd AND navicular syndrome. His front feet were dreadful and his back feet were showing signs too. He had steroid injections into both hoof capsules but, sadly, the damage to the bone surfaces was so bad that no amount of supplements or steroids could reverse what time had created. I only used him for hacking and light schooling but by the time I had the diagnosis from a specialist lameness hospital, he could not be ridden. RIP Sullivan.

How old is your TB? What work do you do with him? What have the vets said is likely to be the outcome?

he is 11 year old he finiish racing as a 9 year old. raced quite alot. i was doing some dressage and started jumping. i dont no what outcome the vet gunna give im i will find out 2 morro. i just hope i could conitue dressage im not to bother about the jumping. He might just become a light hack but i couldnt keep alight hack hes not use 2 me for that. i dn't know if i could sell him thou with this problem or if any1 would take but he a lovely hacking horse
 
Leanne - I'd write a list of questions - like you have in your posts - ready to ask the vet tomorrow. Often, if you're worried sick about something, all the questions you meant to ask get forgotten and you just stand there blubbing like a baby. I've done it loads of times. Write the questions down, including the "what ifs" so if the vet answers your question: can he be ridden again? you would need a supplementary question along the lines of: would he be limited in what work he could do? and: how long (roughly) are we talking about for a recovery? If there are holes in the answers, you could ask your vet for a referral to a specialist lameness centre. Let us know what happens hun x
 
Merlin has had Irap injected into his fetlock and also steroids.

He has arthritis.... djd...... joint mice... (bone chips) etc.

He has also had two lots of Tildren infusions.

Work wise he is in full work for him, which is hacking for 1-3 hours at a time and jumping if the mood takes us

we dont school or dressage as the stress and pressure on the joint is too great and may make him lame (did not do so in the past though)

my big guys got similar probs to yours.. got inject into joint. that didnt work. eventually we got IRAP treatment, egg bar shoes and he went sound.. that was a year ago and since then hes been hacking, schooling and out jumping. I dont trot on the road or hard surfaces and have only jumped him in doors on a surface so far but hes sound and thats the main thing.. Hes 8 years old now and means so much to me.. Good luck with your horse i hope it works out for you
 
What is IRAP treatment? Erm he had the injection i have to start work very slowing i have 2 walk in straight lines. hes goin #g out in walk for 15minutes 2 morro and built it up from there up 2 an hour over the 2weeks. then i have to ring them agen. He has got natural blance show on i dnt no if there any more support shoeing wise i can give him? The vet sed it could take up to 6 weeks for the steriod injection to work. But shd see an improvement in two weeks.
 

My Ex racer developed Bone Spavin in both his hocks (3rd Joint in both has fused) he was very very lame at the time and was on 2 bute a day but due to careful management and time hes sound and bute free (although gets a little stiff in wet and cold weather).

He also has athritus in his front left fore and Fake Ring bone in his Front right.

After the fusion of his hocks he was given cortizone injections directly in to the joints of both and improved but the injections wore off after about 10-12 months. I decided not to continue with them as he was on Cortaflex and this improved his movement no end! hes not on Gloucosemine Plus by Global herbs and is fantastic!.
 
IRAP treatment is where they take a small amount of blood from the horse, mix it with serum etc and do something else to it and then re inject it direct back into the joint.. check out the clyde valley vet web site as they do the treatment also and have details about it.. i know they are no where near you but at least they will tell you what its about instead of my mad ramblings. I honestly dont know how much just the IRAP was, tried to find my old vet bill but no luck (house very messy) my whole bill was just under £2000 but that was xrays, the original steroid injects which didnt work then some overnight stays at the vet hospital and the IRAP treatment and a couple of shoeings too with Egg bars. My guys doing fab and hes a big heavyweigh guy, hes back jumping and hacking and doing fab.. Insurance paid for the bill that time but if he goes lame again on the the same leg then they wont pay out and i will have to find the money myself.. to be honest its defo helped him big time.. they told me too at first box rest etc and he jumped out of his stable onto a concrete yard, used to bronc round is stable, he was on 12 acp tablets a day, after 3 weeks in his box and getting walked out in hand he was a loon and he was turned out into a tiny paddock, flat ground, he stopped the looning a round and was calm, i reckoned safer out and not having hairy fit and racing round than he was in the stable bucking and kicking the walls.. He even broke his stable door by running into it full pelt!! very big lad!! Went sound after his second inject of IRAP... Good luck with your horse..
