How long do steriod injections last when given in the hock normally? My mare had some last year that only lasted for 2 weeks so gave up. New vet has re-done them and so far 3 weeks on still working really well sound at moment. I know they are not a long term solution for spavins shes tried everything else and this one vet used was a straight steriod this time not one mixed with something else.

Also is it normal for when you change vets for your old vet to ring up to see how the horse is getting on?

It very much depends on the type of steroid used and the dose administered as well. The combination of steroid and hyaluronic acid (HA) is what I generally pick, but the steroid dose is not reduced due to the addition of HA, so I find this more beneficial TBH.

The effect of the steroid itself lasts about 6wks but the inflammation may settle well and not flare up again for even a year or more...depends very much on the damage to the hock joints. It varies case by case TBH.

Sounds like a pretty caring vet - I assume you moved areas? I'm not sure any of us are totally normal!!! :D

Theres not much damage to the hiock thats why vet was surprised at how lame she was after doing xrays.

No havent changed areas just got a second opinion who i went with.
