Steroid injection into the hock for arthritis

Vet said he may have 'gone nuclear' on the sedation for the injection this afternoon, horse nearly went over! Have to wait and see if he has a good reaction to the injection.

Aww! Fingers crossed it works! Sedation has the opposite effect on my boy - he has to have three times the amount of a normal horse and even then it still barely touches him! :p

Injections into the hocks made no difference to my horse either. He had Tildren at the same time. I'm interested to try this cartrophen thou as my 12 months are up under the insurance for it soon.

You are right wyrdsister, the Cartrophen is giving into his neck and chest (to my relief; didn't fancy trying to inject his hocks!) - I misunderstood vet when she injected his hocks with steroids and said "we'll inject Cartrophen next time" - I just assumed she meant hocks again.

Cinnamontoast, bless your lad! Crossing my fingers for him, keep us posted.

I tried everything with my mare, it all had a short term effect and then didn't help although she has a very aggressive form resulting in her being PTS on Tuesday, aged only 8.

For milder cases I know people where the injection has worked wonders.

So sorry for you :( Such a baby at 8 :(

Fingers crossed. He is adorable all doped up!

Isn't he!! I just gave him tons of cuddles!

Ask for it, quick! My insurance is out in October, so I wanted to try this now in case I need anything else.

I'm gonna ring the vets first thing Monday :) was contemplating having the hocks injected again as its free but don't see the point as it did nothing last time.

I had steroid injections in oct 2012 in my ponies hock that is in process of fusing, he isn't worked hard but we hack & school, infrequent jumping in past few months and only recently has he become unlevel. Changed to synequin ( was on cortavet HA) re-injected hock today with steroids ( vet said was harder to inject so thinks may be fusing - hence lameness as is painful when fusing ) and weekly pentosan injections for four weeks. Am interested to know if anybody has used pentosan and the frequency as have been told this can be monthly.. The price makes me a little giddy but if that's what he needs that is what he shall have 😄
