Today I had a steroid injection into my back as have had chronic back pain following an accident 18 months ago.
Very excited, hoping that it works but also gutted to hear that no riding for 2 weeks!!
I wasn;t expecting this as was told it would be business as usual after 48 hours.
I know this is not that long in the grand scheme of things but also know it will really frustrate me.
Anyone else had the injection and were they advised the same thing. Doctor did look disapprovingly when I said I still rode so maybe he just is an anti riding doctor?

No u shouldn't ride and you should also take it easy. I have had steroids and was told to rest so it can actually help whatever inflammation there. It didn't work in my case and ended up having disc removed. Think long term and have the two weeks off

Was it cortisone? I had one in my shoulder and gave it 2 days, doc said a week, but it was fine. Sadly didn't help long term, still have very painful chronic tendonitis. Hope yours works better! :)

Im a physio. If you ride or do too much heavy stuff to soon the steroids won't treat the area affected they will be moved.
Totally up to you but i would wait 2 weeks and the injection is likely to be more successful that way.

I had four in one go in may and couldn't walk for over two weeks, so depends on you. However I have had chronic back pain for 14 years so they caused a lot of internal bruising. Tbh I wouldnt rush it but depends how you feel, I physically couldn't have ridden after a few days or a few weeks!
I have since had a failed discogram and am on the waiting list for radiation to the nerves so have my fingers crossed the steroids work for you.

yes, I had 2 done (quite painful at the time and getting more so) :(
I will wait the 2 weeks, going to give it the best chance to work.
Don't like the sound of not being able to walk for 2 weeks :(

Very painful when done, then had no feeling in one leg for 24 hours, horrible :(
You may be better than I was, from what the hospital said it was due to the time I have been bad for as to why it took so long to recover :(
But my way of thinking was if this fixes it then I can ride and have a life without pain no point rushing back on horse and risking that, see how you feel your body will tell you when you are well enough.
Good luck.

I couldn't ride for five months because of back pain, had the injections, did basically nothing for the next two days other than lie in the sunshine in the garden, didn't ride for two weeks though first ride back was at a competition. Horse was warmed up for me and I just did the competing bit. Has been fine and that was two years ago. I would follow the instructions. Good luck with it.

Hiya, I have degenerative disc disease in my lower back, and have the injections. You have to let them "settle" into the area, they can take a few days to actually start to work, but once they do it's fantastic.

My advice (as a frequent flyer) is to wait to let the drugs do what they are supposed to do - and then get the benefits of riding for a long time after. Your back is so crucial, no point in rushing something that is going to help long term. ;)

shysmum, and anyone else who had them, how long til the pain settles down after injection? doctor just said pain would come back with a vengeance for a little while but not to worry.
Had them about 4 hours ago and feel like someone is pushing a brick into my back :(
I'm no whinger but hate having to lie around!!

I had my right elbow joint injected on Monday morning,as with most the injection was bearable but had the most horrendous pain from about 2 hours after the injection for about 6 hours.Has been getting better but still very sore and keep getting some cramps in that area.Good luck and hope its successful.:)

You've gotten some excellent advice...take it.

I've had years of injections for bulging discs at L4,5,6, S1, and facet joint jabs. When it works, it's magic. My problem has been the amount of lifting, carrying, bending, pulling I do on the farm. That's why I keep having to go back for more. There's a point when the injections of steroid are contraindicated for one's body. I've reached that point. I am ever so careful, now. I haven't ridden in almost 20+ years, and frankly, I don't miss it. Whenever I've had the injections, I've had to take it easy for at least 3 or 4 days. Riding wasn't an issue, so I never felt under any pressure in that regard. The pressure I did feel was having to rely on my OH to feed and muck out my Shires while I was laid up on my back. So, I never really took it completely easy.

Indulge yourself. The longer you give the steroid the chance to work, the better it will be in the long run for you. Take care of yourself and good luck.

I really feell for you, back pain is just a ****.

The first time I had the jab, it was under a full general, and they used imaging to get it in the right spot (note, i had BUPA then, and this was at The London Clinic ;)). That was instant, but i still had to bed rest for many days. I just didn't want to chance it. That pain relief lasted FIVE YEARS !!!!! Either that, or the issue stabilised itself.

Since then I've had the jabs from a local (and fab) rheumatologist. They only give you the jabs when you are really bad to start with, as they say the more you have, the less they work. Mine have been effective within about two days, but I still have a lot of rest for the next 7 - 10 days, to let it all settle. Remember, all your muscles have gone into tight spasms to protect the damaged area, and they have to relax too. Mine actually pull me over to one side.

I am mid - way to needing it all doing again, after about two years. I can feel my back when I lift a fork of muck into the barrow - so I have to wear a cheap leather weight lifting belt (it works, lol). And I've had one really serious episode about two months ago. Riding actually relaxes my back, think it's the movement - BUT the second I try and do a few jumps, the turning immediately pulls me into pain. :( So I appreciate my quiet life with my lad.

I hope that helps you. sm xx
