Steroid injections - into neck/back

Could anyone tell me anything more about corticosteroid injections being used in neck/back problems?

How do they help? Is it mainly a painkilling method, or are there other benefits? What are the risks? How long do they tend to last?

Any info gratefully received

My boy has had them into his neck, he had low grade arthritis. I believe they did it has an anti-inflamatory and pain killing method. My vet seemed to think that it would either 'fix' the problem or might need to be done again. This would be dependent on how he got on. He does have a lot of other things wrong with him and needless to say with th unhelpful and unclear explanation that I got 'from the best vets in the UK' I changed vets. He had the injections 2 months ago and is not scheduled to have any more at the moment.

Bad side effects, infection, possibility of laminitis, and stiffness in area.
 
My TB had them into his neck 3.5ish years ago. He was wobbly on his feet for about a week afterwards, but was fine then. They were the push he needed to help him get moving again (he has advanced arthritis in his neck) The effects lasted about 6 months and without them I don't think I'd have been able to get him moving again. By the time they'd worn off he'd got enough muscle and topline to be able to cope with the pain.

She's being scanned today and having follow up xrays on friday, but the vets are thinking arthritic changes in the neck are putting pressure on the spinal cord.

Does anyone know whether going ahead with steroid injections would mar the clarity if I were to go ahead and have a myelogram done?
