So, last night I took my dog to the vets - he had a rash on his tummy and a "sore" on each hind leg - a bit like a warty spot. He has had a warty spot before and it was treated with cream and antibiotics, it did heal but took a long time.

This vet has just prescribed some steroids as treatment.

However, this is the 4th time one of my dogs has been prescribed steroids - dog no 1 had steroids and then anti-histamines for runny eyes - didn't really work - he still has sticky eyes.

The dog I took last night has also had two courses of steroids for an infection in the ears - had two lots as the infection was recurring.

All the vets I have seen have been different but all prescribed steroids.

Does anyone thing that is weird? Because I am starting to think so..........

Steroids are a common treatment for many conditions and can be very useful to pin point possible causes of illness.
They are also incredibly powerful drugs that stop dogs feeling itchy and are potent painkillers so provide almost instant relief in the cases of bad ear infections and skin conditions. They speed up healing as they reduce the chances of self trauma.

Different levels of doses are used depending on what they need to do
.ie treat allergies, control pain, control immune medicated conditions, pallative care etc

They have a bad reputation due to the potential side effects esp with long-term use but are incredibly useful drugs that dramatically improve quality of life for many animals.

Ps if your dog still has sticky eyes its probably worth following up on..may be allergy but could also be dry eye .lots of other other treatments and tests are possible if antihistamines and steroids have both not caused resolution.

I have steroid cream for eczema, I use it for spots, and any cuts or hot spots on the dogs all the time, it sorts things out really quickly.
