Hello everyone.

I was thinking about contacting Steve Young Horsemanship for a friend's daughter's pony that has trailer issues. Does anyone know how much he charges, does he come often to the south west and and can people recommend him? Thank you very much!

I haven’t got any direct feedback of him but his videos don’t make me feel comfortable, I can’t put my finger on why, he just doesn’t come across great imo

I have firsthand experience of Richard Maxwell and he’s great but £££ spendy but completely worth it in my opinion. In fact, I’ve used him twice on 2 different horses and both times I would have paid double for the service because he cut out all the problems and gave me the end result (with the need to practice, of course)

Really??

Apart from the long (too long IMHO) parts where they're driving or him explaining things a bit too much, I thought he was quite interesting to watch. My OH has picked up a few things that he uses with the babies to keep them out of his space and keep him a bit safer in the field. SY looks at things slightly differently and approaches things from a different view point. Most of his stuff is about timing really - releasing pressure at just the right time.

I enjoy his videos and demos. I sometimes quite like his chat bits as well, although I agree he can ramble on a bit. I like his training and how black and white he is with the horses. It's very simple to understand and implement. It's helped me a lot, and he clearly gets good results which last. You could probably just text Tanya for a quote, I think she handles all that side of things anyway. They are very accessible as a family.

I think he’s probably very good but my goodness his ego seems enormous. He also loves the sound of his own voice so I end up FFing through huge portions of his videos.

I second this recommendation for Richard! He is expensive but worth it! I had him out over 20yrs ago (showing my age) and he had one session with my tricky mare and she was a perfect loader after. He is literally magic 😂

I’m another with good experience of RM, he is not cheap but spends a lot of time with you and your horse ensuring you have all the tools to help calm your horse yourself.
My horse know loads straight away happily and calmly , she used to be a nightmare and really stressed .

I have never seen Steve Young in real life, but RM is over £400 plus VAT. Before spending that kind of money on anyone, I would do the usual checks - trailer service and at least trot up pony and double check for any lameness. There might be someone local who can help also - like on this list: https://intelligenthorsemanship.co.uk/trainers-recommended-trainers-horsemanship/ who would be more affordable and thus able to come more than once if needed.

I've seen RM at quote a few demos and clinics and had always been a fan.

I looked at booking into a Groundwork session before but, despite explaining I didn't have a horse fit enough, you were forced to book a double session and pay £520 (iirc). I didn't have any issues I just wanted a lesson with him to sharpen me up. I was told I could use the first session for bodywork but I had a regular physio and I did massage/bodywork so I didn't want that either. His right to stipulate his conditions but it put me off.

A friend did book in because she was having loading issues. He did get the horse to load but not happily and it the problem still remained when she got home. She had a bad experience with the whole thing but not my place to go into details.

At the last demo I was at there was definite flooding of a pony with a dummy. Pony was totally stressed and really upset with the dummy slipping and falling partially off. I know things don't always go to plan but he kept on and on until the pony froze and we were told that was acceptance. Needless to say I am no longer a fan. All the cryotherapy stuff put me off too.

I'm geographically challenged but what about someone like Jason Webb, Sean Coleman, Joe Midgley?

I don't recommend Michael Peace - he'll just loop rope round the bottom and pull the horse in .... not actually work on the issue or hosres confidence.... and charge a fortune for the pleasure....

would TRT be an option for you?

In my view you just don't need to spend ££££££ on a trailer loading 'specialist' unless there is some back story. Joe Midgley charges £50 a session and there is only 1 horse I am aware of (from loads) where he did not teach the horse to happily load in a single session. The 'failure' was a horse with a HUGE back story and he did not fail anyway. He just said the horse was not ready to load as there were too many other issues that needed addressing first. I'd pay mega bucks for some behavioural issues. But not loading unless the behaviour was beyond extreme.

I had a guy come out to Reggie a few weeks back. He was good and in a price bracket where you could have multiple visits if required.

Depending where you are I'm happy to recommend. Although I appreciate this is an old(ish) thread.

Ooo SW just realised who I would recommend - Connie Colfox. She won’t be cheap but she is excellent. All the eventers send their tricky ones to her.
