Has anybody got any experience with stick on shoes. They seem to be quite popular in some parts of America. I'm not really thinking of using them just intrigued as if people on here have good pasts with them I might try for my currently barefoot mare just for a little extra grip. Does anyone know how long they stick for or if they tend to fly off when jumping?

Thanks in advance

From my experience they are expensive and come off fairly easily in mud, you need to shoe every 3 or 4 weeks and I wouldn't use them unless you have no alternative.

I think I would prefer to use normal shoes and studs if jumping on grass and the horse is struggling with grip than put on stick on shoes that will probably come off too easily and may not be strong enough to use studs with when ground conditions are slippy, most barefoot horses are fine on most surfaces apart from firm ground with wet grass on top, if you shoe for the summer it is easy enough to take them off for the rest of the year.

The only ones I have had experience with are Billy Crothers ones which are very tight but very expensive

I would have to agree
However you think they 'look' would you choose to have your horse PTS or have it look in your opinion silly

This is very shallow .I had a much loved mare I had owned for 22 years and for the last years of her life she had (for various reasons ) to have stick on shoes they kept her sound and happy and able to enjoy a good retirement and no matter how 'silly' you think she looked they worked for her.
I loved her dearly and find it very shallow to judge something on how silly you think it looks .They gave her a couple of years of extra time when she was field sound and comfortable .

Settle down love. They look stupid so I would never have them over shoes or barefoot. If they are remedial then as you say who cares. Remedial is not the same as choosing to have them to be on trend.

I am very sorry to hear about your horse. Of course I wouldn't care how something looked if it was going to really help my horse to that extent. I think we were referring to when people can happily have horses shod normally and choose to have stick on shoes as a style thing. I am genuinely sorry if my comment offended you in any way

How can that be? I can't get my head round that.

Sorry just saw your reply.
I think because they are glued so attached to a large surface rather than on a few nails they will restrict hoof mechanism even more, a bit like gluing a sheet a paper to cardboard vs. stapling it in a few places. But I have no practical experience myself, was just asking the farrier out of curiosity.
It would also probably depends on the design and material of the glue on shoe.

Oh right, I have no experience of glue on shoes apart from one mare in a race yard I worked at and hers were always coming unstuck of the hoof wall, not quite sure why she had them either but didnt race for long.
See I would have thought the glue would be more flexible to move a bit with the hoof but as I say I have no experience with them really

3 sets of Imprint shoes a few years ago saved my old horse's life. They are flexible so I can't see how they restrict the blood flow in the hoof at all. We managed 6 weeks per set (with shoes being removed by Andrew Poynton the remedial farrier and replaced - they didn't come off themselves). During the time the ground was frozen hard and rutted, or it was sucking mud. I was very impressed by them but they were eye-wateringly expensive and could never have been used long term on price alone.

They look stupid. Thats all i know.

Well if they save a horses life who ruddy cares. I find most human shoes are horrid and damage feet, at least horse shoes are designed for comfort and fit, I cannot say that for most human shoes.

Humans squash their ( not mine ) into stupid pointy shoes and 3 inch heals for so called style and watch humans struggling to walk in them which I must say is funny.

* This is stupid that is all I know *

Then they struggle later in life with permanent damage#

We go to the ends and back finding a good farrier or BF trimmer and worry so much about balance and shape on our horses, but then squash our own feet into pointy shoes and then try walk in them !! where is the logic in that ?????
