My farrier has suggested that we might have to give stick on shoes a go for my boy to give him a rest from nails - his feet seem to be growing very slowly at the moment and cracking is becoming a problem.

Does anyone have any experience of these - he did say that he knows of a couple of eventers that have them so I am assuming they must stay on!!

Well most modern commercial aircraft are glued together, so it isn't wrong in principle. Adhesive bonds need very clean surfaces and full wetting of the joint to work well.

not my horse personally, but a horse at work had the glue on shoes... this horse has white line disease and his feet just crumbled away. but we used these for a few months. although very expensive but they did the trick. you have to check at shoes if they will allow them as many events particually ODE dont like them. this horse is now back with normall shoes and nails. so they did the trick.

they stay on up to a point. we ended up replacing them a fair few times

My pony who has Cushings has Imprint shoes - these are stick on heart bars. They have been brilliant and have literally saved his life as he is a chronic laminitic and even the concussion caused by nailing on shoes can make him sore. His hoof quality before he had the stick on shoes was terrible, now (two years later) his feet are like iron. My farrier also does a lot of glue on aluminium shoes. He was telling me that this year more than any other, he has seen a lot of very poor quality hooves (we have had lots of wet and then dry weather which causes horses feet to expand and then contract which makes them break up). If you have a good farrier, it is worth discussing it with him - I am very lucky my farrier trained with one of the ILPH resident farriers so specialises in remedial shoeing.

Yep have tried standard glue on jobbies along with just about everything else!

They don't work well in the wet as tend to come unstuck, hoof oils will also tend to un stick them.

They are fine for a couple of shoeings just to give the feet a 'rest' but I couldn't do much with the horse other than hack on level surfaces or flatwork. Once the weather got wetter they were just uneconomical.

THey may have better glues now but when we tried it was just a very strong version of superglue which I had to keep using to stick down the petals when they 'ping' off
