Hi

I am currently looking at taking my progressive rider's test 5 and 6. I have to canter without stirrups.

What are sticky bum jodphurs like? Are they worth it? Will they help me stay on?

Also are there any disadvantages with them? I like jumping so will they hinder that?

Many thanks

They won't help you "stay on", only good balance and working on your core will do that. They make you more stable and secure in your seat. I love mine, but find it more difficult to dismount when I'm wearing them, and also you don't sit "in" to the saddle quite as much.

At the end of the day I think it is your balance that keeps you on but while you are working on that I do think they help. I have some of the Dublin riding tights that have gel spots. They are very grippy and have saved my bacon in a couple of spooky moments BUT they don't really allow you to move your seat in the saddle which I think could be a problem when you are jumping (I don't jump anymore so not tried it). I got treated to a pair of the pikeur grip seat breeches and these don't stick in the same way so could be better for you. Also have a look at the Harry hall chester sticky bum ones. These are not sticky in the way the Dublin ones are but I think are a bit more grippy than an ordinary full seat and they are reasonably priced.

Spend the money on developing your canter seat, it'll be a far more worthwhile investment. Grippy jods can be a doubled edged sword.

I find my dublins great for flatwork & jumping. Doesn't stick me to the saddle but find trot & canter less effort as bottom is not sliding on saddle.

They get less grippy with wear and washing, so are only useful for a while. That's OK if you use the time learning to balance, but don't expect them to be a magic wand for unbalanced riding.
