Mine, not my pony's :O)

I'm not sure if its because hes a big wide Haffy, but when I ride my boy, my toes poke out. I am a happy hacker and I am comfortable and stable when I ride, but when ever I see a photo of me riding, my toes stick out!

I have tried turning them in, but it starts to make my leg ache and I feel like I'm squeezing my poor boy! Any tips on how to get my toes and lower leg in a more forward position?

I start Pilates this week as I am very tight in my hips, so maybe this will help?

Thanks

Instead of concentrating on your toes, work on turning your knee forwards so the inside of your thigh lies flat on the saddle, rather than the back. Don't think of squeezing your legs tight, more knees forwards. Sticking a short whip, or stick or something under your knee helps too. But, it has to be under knee, not thigh & positioned so it slips if you turn your knee outwards.

This problem nearly always starts higher up inthe hips so Pilates will help if you feel stiff here. You need to think more about the seat/hips/pelvis which then affect the knee and lower leg. A good instructor will help. Forcing your toes in will not get to the root of the problem.

The other cause is if your horse is too wide for you (again, relates to how you sitting and your hips) You may find the problem disappears with a narrower horse or a saddle with narrower twist, so maybe have a play (if you can) to see where the problem stems from.

We have an xx wide saddle which I have thought was the problem.

I am not too worried as I am a happy hacker and feel safe and secure, just doesnt look great! Ill ask my pilates instructor if she can recommend any exercises to help loose my hips and legs x
